Psychology behind spending $ on a service...

I have a mailing list that I rarely use, it's for a t-shirt site that I let languish for months, then will get energy to make new designs, maybe send out a marketing email, then I let it languish again. Total waste of potential revenue, I know.

I bought mailing list software a few years back that works just fine so I don't need to spend the monthly dough on aweber or similar but it occurred to me yesterday that if I was spending money on a service, it'd probably make me work harder to design and market regularly, since I hate wasting money.

Anybody else do something similar? Spend money on something you don't necessarily need just to kick your booty into gear (or keep it there)?

    Totally!

I think the best thing I've done is pay for a mentor. It wasn't cheap and it definitely kept me motivated to have it be a good investment.

Isn't it something how we can find a spectacular resource and if its free, we don't see it as being worth as much?

This is probably not what you want to hear, however, yes I did that.

About 3 or 4 years ago I started a monthly subscription with Aweber. I paid for it for over a year, maybe two and never used it. Then one wedding anniversary one of my daughters saw that I had a monthly sub to Aweber and, bless her heart, she got the kids together and paid it up for an entire year for an anniversary gift. I'm ashamed to say that I still didn't use it.

Finally about a year or so ago I let it go.

Yes, I thought that by paying for it I'd use it. I didn't.

I know I need an AR and when I finally do start using one it will be MailChimp. At Least I can get my list up to 500 before they charge me.

Okay, here's a kick in the butt because I think you'd agree that's what you need. You already know the answer to the question. And now that you've posted the question, it's likely you'll spend a lot of time coming back to this thread to see what people think.

And doing that will only take you away from the task at hand, which is doing stuff that will advance your business goals.

It doesn't matter whether you mail from your own server or from a service (though if you mail through your ISPs server to an old list you WILL get Spam complaints). Hmmm... sounds like yet another reason to go with the autoresponder service.

Anyway, I think you get my drift. Get busy and make some money. Good Luck!

Okay, I've probably thrown about $100k away by not using a third party responder long ago in the past.

I had one list alone doing several thousand per month from broadcast mailouts. But I was sending from my own server, who knows how many weren't getting delivered. I didn't have a follow-up series in place either!

Those two things alone can increase your results exponentially from your already existing list. Just automate the messages to do what you're already doing lazily, except that EVERYONE that signs up will always get the offer. Instead of just the group that's subscribed at that time.

        Huh?

Maybe it's because I'm still working on my second cup of coffee, but something in this statement didn't register.

Seems like whether a message is broadcast or scheduled, it still only goes to the group that is subscribed at the time the message goes out. Unless you are advocating ignoring unsubscribe requests and spamming people who have attempted to opt out already.

I'm not making any specific accusations, just trying to get what you really intended to say.

Is anyone using AutoResponsePlus? I have the self hosted version. I've used it moderately, but not done anything truly successful with it.
