How to get traffic to a new user-generated site?

I am looking to start a site that relies on user-created content. Now, what I am wondering is this. How would you suggest that I get the ball rolling on this? It seems like a case of the chicken and the egg. No content means no visitors, but no visitors means no content.

    Ren,

First, have you done your keyword research for your niche?

Once you have done your keyword research and identfiy 5 keywords that has at least 1000 searches and a low Strength of Competition (SOC). Go for it and write your articles base on the 5 keyword you have identified.

Submit them to social bookmark after the article is lived.

I'm not planning on placing a blog on the site nor do I wish to write articles. The site will depend entirely on the users. I don't want to share my idea for fear of competition, so let's talk about a fictional scenario. Suppose that I am starting a job board for ventriloquists. How do I get those first theater companies to post want ads and how do I get ventriloquists to start visiting?

If you think about a site like Overheard in New York or StumbleUpon, then the situation is the same. How did they draw people in to participate when they were first starting out. Without those initial visitors, they have nothing.

I think you should create some kind of incentive as a free gift in order to attract visitors and your gift should be of high quality, so your visitors shared it with others.

It should work like viral marketing.

There is no way around that. Writing articles is one great way to do that. If your afraid to tell people about your site and what it has to offer because of fear of competition then you will never get any traffic. StumbleUpon is basically just like digg or reddit but all 3 are very successful. I guess im saying this to say don't worry about the competition. At the end of the day you have to get the word out via some form of content if you want your site to be successful.

If its driven by content then sign up for your own site and start posting content. Ask some of your friends to sign up and start posting content. If you have a twitter or facebook page tell all your followers about your new site and ask them to sign up. Write a press release. Do whatever you can, whitehat of course, that will help you get the word out.
Well of course I would share the site with people at some point and not worry about the competition. I was simply stating that I didn't want to spill the beans before I have even built it. That would just be a good way for someone to beat me to it.

The best way to get fast traffic on any site is through social media networking. Sharing continuously is how your going to get a lot of traffic. There are plenty of ways to do this, organic searches are best, but it takes a while to get noticed on the search engines, so your best bet is social media.

If you are good at writing, go reddit or other social media sites. Make it interesting or helpful will be better. It helps people find your lens.

Link-Building is the key to a successful website after the Penguin update early last year. The more back-links to your site, the more traffic you will get.

Here's a list of Link-Building activities that I use personally:

    1. Content Syndication
    2. Blog Commenting
    3. Sponsoring WordPress Themes
    4. Article Directories
    5. SEO
    6. Video Marketing
    7. Forum Marketing
    8. Web 2.0
    9. Ego-Bait
    10. Interviews
    11. Social Networking
    12. Fiverr Gigs

I have written a massive guide on Back-Linking, you might want to check that out for a more in-depth explanation.

I hope this helped! If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I'll be more than happy to answer your questions!
