What are the first 10 steps you take to drive traffic to a new site?

Hi, a bit of an introduction since this is one of my first posts and consider myself an IM newb. Although, been hosting, coding, managing businesses, and marketing for the last 10 years (even have a technical degree) I have not really tried to make money online as an IM. My first few experiments with CPA were greyhat but I made $100 for about half an hour of work (and they were very difficult to duplicate). Needless to say, I'm hooked (and all white hat now)! It's becoming a hobby and a few weeks ago I launched a small site that is bringing in about $2-5 (from referrals via twitter) a day on autopilot.

The problem is I haven't had any further luck driving traffic to the site and I've got an overload of information. Your advice here would be GREATLY appreciated to help me break this plateau. So, the question is:

What the first 10 steps you take to drive traffic to a new site?

Thanks!

If it's free traffic I desire, I create a related blog and get busy.

      I'll always start with SEO..
      1. Good keyword selection
      2. Title & meta tags
      3. Robots.txt
      4. RSS feeds & pings
      5. XML Sitemap
      6. Use Google Webmaster Tools
      7. Quality anchored backlinks
      8. Get listed in DMoz & Yahoo directories
      9. Get at least 1 link from a wikipedia page
      10. Press release
      11. Write original articles
      12. Turn articles into videos / podcasts & submit to relevant hosting sites
That's about all I can think of, off the top of my head.. there's plenty more but I hope this helps for now.

Joe is right.. If you can afford it use Google Adwords - but use it in conjunction with your SEO, so make sure your main keywords match. Adwords is great to get you going for instant targeted traffic while you wait for your SEO stuff to kick in.

SEO is the long term solution in my books, if you don't mind waiting a few weeks or months.

I'm looking for long term residuals that require minimal maintenance, so possibly SEO is a better fit, but I don't have much time either. So maybe Adwords to get it started...

How would you get a link from wikipedia? Especially if your site isn't a content site (ie. squeeze page, review page or something along those lines)

Pretty easy. Scroll to the bottom of the page for the article---you should be able to edit links from there.

Not sure why you would bother though. It doesn't seem to funnel traffic, and it's nofollow.

    Hi,

    Welcome to the warrior forum.

Everyone has their own opinions on how to drive traffic to their websites. However, click on the thread below as it delves into some highly unique 'outside of the box' traffic driving strategies.

    http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...c-sources.html

    Also...

Also forum marketing can be very effective and has created a lot of revenue for me.

Do it right and be helpful and descriptive, but don't waffle about subjects and scenarios you know very little about, and you'll get yourself more than your fair share of curious and interested free targeted traffic clicking through your sig links.

    Hope this helps.

    Garry.
