Just wondering, when it comes to being successful at IM, does it matter if your sites are .com, or .net etc?

Search engine like Google.com prefer .com and .net domain extension.

To avoid losing traffic, using .com is the better way. When someone say go to YouTube to watch ABC video, most people will assume that it's .com domain.

Peter hit the nail right on the head, when possible, .com should always be your first choice.

Google has confirmed it has no preference for tld's (domain extensions). However .com are the default for many people browsing so by not having the .com you can and will be getting your potential customers visiting your competitor (who has the .com).

Try to use .com and go to Domainsbot.com and you can search for available domains and the tool will add hyphens and synonyms so you can get a .com pretty easily.

.com is always the most popular and best choice for your online business. So,you'd better
own your .com domain name to compete with your rivals. As for .net,it's always used by
    network service providing organizations.

Every now and then I try to do something radical... Some new SEO technique or some broken page or some script. It can get expensive to use the .coms, so I use .info for those and if they do well as .info, I'll use the technique/script/idea on a "real" domain. Google in particular seems to really like them, despite having said otherwise.

Peter is right. Use .com or .net

People tend to remember the beginning of the domain name then, they say hmmm was that .com or .net or .us or........

    I do it, too.

I only go with .com domains. Sometimes I see a .com taken and the .net still available. I then decide if I want to find another .com or if I take the.net. I almost always pass on the .net. I feel if I take the .net the .com for the same domain is going to be steeling my traffic.

.Com is king. I only buy and use .com names due to consumer perception.
