I don't know what niche you're in, but usually when there is no competition, that's a bad sign. If no one is selling in that niche, it usually means that there is no money to be made in that niche.

And you say, 18,000,000 results? That's a lot. Try to put your keywords in quotation marks. That will give you the real competition for that keyword. Look for keywords with less than 30.000 searches. That way you'll rank higher in the search engines.

Yes you can. My new site has only been promoted with SEO for 2 months now and I've hit page 1 a few times for keywords averaging between 35-868 million other sites. For Google it's harder but for Yahoo and Bing it's much easier.

You are only "competing" against 1,000 pages. In fact, even those first 1,000 results don't equate to "competition" because many of them aren't even actively attempting to rank for your keywords. Your focus should only be on the top 10. So yes, you possibly could rank on page one. Just analyze the first ten results and determine if you can "beat" them or not.

As others have pointed out, you could reach the first page, but i would try to search your term with quotations around it, that will give you the best competition results, also it depends on the strength of that competiton too.

It is always good to count your competition in relation to your keyword. That gives you a better chance to be in Top 10 at Google.

I would say it is possible to hit the first page. I did it myself with a site that had 40,000,000 plus search results a while ago.

It was the first site I did this with and it's still on th fits page. However it could take about 3-4 months until you get there.

The thing you need to look for is the amount of "exact matches". This means the amount of search results when you type in your keyword term in quotes. If you're a newbie I recommend looking for keywords with no more than 10,000 exact matches.

In addition, you need to reverse-engineer the search results that appear for the exact results of this term. To do this, click to view the "cached" version of the website in question to determine the keyword density.

I got a site of mine on page 1 with close to 18,000,000 results (17,700,000 as of writing this) and how I did it was by buying the site when it was 1 year old, it was already on page 2 then just 1 more year of constantly giving the search engines what they want... relevant, up to date content. The site is updated a few times a week with no exceptions.
So yes it can be done IMO, it'll just take time and constant attention for a year or more... even if you don't see results immediately, keep at it and keep giving the search engines and visitors more and more of what they want.
What they want is images, videos, updates, social interaction, etc etc - Relevancy to your target keyword. It's quite simple really, it just needs to be done

In addition, it doesn't matter how many search results there are... it matters how well optimized those sites are!

I have ranked several times on the 1st page of Google for keyword phrases with 50 million competing sites before now. Not all of the keyword phrases were particularly well-optimized though!
