How to Market a Forum?

A close friend has asked for my advice on marketing his
health related forum. Though I've had experience in marketing
other types of sites, I've never been involved it for a forum.

I would appreciate any advice you can give.

Many of the usual, general marketing methods should work:

Article marketing
SEO / backlinking
social bookmarking
youtube/videomarketing

Join other health related forums, participate in them, and have a link to your forum in the sig-file?

You need quality post to start driving traffic to your forum pretty much thing of it as a social blog when you first start out. There are plugins etc you can buy to input on your form that will index your postings better to drive traffic to your forum. Be sure to remove any spammers right away. If its not quality content DELETE IT the worse thing you could do is have a spam fest on your hands where people visiting your site see pure crap and have no reason to sign up.

Sean, I'm aware of plugins for WordPress sites but this is not a blog, I'm not aware of any specifically for forums. Can you enlighten me. Ken

There is also an product out there I beta tested a while back called

You can participate in other health forums' discussion including link of your health forum in Signature.

You can post answers in Yahoo answers for relevant question and putting your forum's link in the resource box.

You can post messages including your forum's link in Yahoo, Google, Myspace and Facebook groups.
