Default Domain Names Ripped Off

Has any warrior on here asked for input on some domain names you were planning on buying only to have the bought before you could bat an eye?

I just had that happen to me today and I would hate to think it was done by fellow warriors but it just seem very weird that right after I posted the two domains I like for my PLR membership site were taken.

I had asked for input and had to run out to do some errands and when I got home and went to buy them they were gone. Hummmm

Well makes me not want to post asking for feedback on ideas etc.

In the old days warriors would not do this.

Just blowing off some steam as I am pissed.

John

I don't blame you man, that's big time BS.

Another thing that I've noticed on here is people getting into these immature arguments about stupid things.

You know this is a forum of people with common interests, why can't we get along and give honest feedback to people like John without stealing his "thunder"....?

I don't know, I just think some Warriors could stand to be a little more classy...a little more ethical.

Oh Yes,

It happens all the time. Even doing a search to see if the name is available it can happen.

NEVER ask "is this a good name" until you buy it.

George Wright P.S. and when you check to see if it's available be sure to buy it right then. I had over 100 URLs purchased the same hour I searched them. 100 were available and an hour later they weren't.

From the above real-time stats you can see that not everyone who views a post here is a Warrior.

Whenever I see folks asking for domain ideas I often wonder if they are aware of the eyeballs that are watching.

I'm guessing you have figured this out...

George buddy this old warrior has learned his lesson. I had posted from my BlackBerry and could not buy them until I got home and I thought I woul dget some feedback before buying.

Oh well lesson learned. I guess they did not like my other two choices LOL

No wonder you are annoyed. It's such as shame that we have to be so cloak and dagger.. I suppose there are lots of people who want to know what niches etc to get into and will latch on to any hints.

Of course, it may not have been someone here but just coincidence - I hope so.

I didn't think you Aussies could even order domain names!?

Something about GoDaddy registration taking almost ONE MEGABYTE of bandwidth to complete an order.

Which pretty much pushes you guys over the limit...

Joke. My Aussie mates (plenty here in London) are always complaining about the piss-poor bandwidth you guys get...

John - I just checked and only of the domains you listed is "unavailable".

The perception of "fellow warrior" always surprises me - there are thousands of people here with no name or any identifier listed, lots of scammers and people who will take any advantage they can find. It's a public forum.

But - just eliminate that one name and you've still got a lot to choose from.

Something else to consider...

When you do a search for a domain, a few of the major players will then 'capture' that name, and from that point on you will need to register that domain name through that service if you want that name.

So if someone searches for the availability of a name on one of the services that uses the 'capture model', and someone else then checks at a later date on another service, that name will show up as unavailable.

Why would you announce a good available domain name on a public forum, especially one like this? Sorry, no sympathy here. Chalk it up as a lesson learned the hard way.

Just out of curiosity....check the whois of the "newly aquired" domain....compare that info from the whois from some of the websites in signatures of some suspected of doing this......maybe that will lead you to the culpits. You may not be able to do anything about it now...but you will know who not to trust in the future.

Almost every "contest thread" lately does this....everyone posts some great domain suggstions in the thread when they should be PM'ed...many of the top ones are snatched up by others before the OP can make a decision. It's rare when the OP asks for all entries to be PM'ed....

Domains are so cheap, I would always buy a few then ask for advice once you own them. If you have a few good ones that you don't use, just sell them and get your money back, ( maybe even a little profit)

OR

Better yet, set up a PLR product on the site and sell the functional site at a larger profit.

Best to you,
William Dean

Just an Idea. Have gone to WhoIs and typed in the domain names to see who registered them> Then you can come back and do a search for them and determine if it truly was a Warrior who snatched them up. It would be nice to right a letter expressing your disappointment in that action.

You can always turn it into a positive. Create a domain company and price your domains slightly less than the competition and spread the word around the forum. Then start dropping domain names you are interested in left and right. You should be able to fatten your pockets right up by the end of the year.

David

I learned my lesson the hard way on a different forum. I like this forum and the majority of the people are solid but there are some scammers out there you have to watch out for.

I have over a 100 domain names and find that when I think a domain name will work for me, I just get it. I figure that even if I don't end up using it within a year, it was only a $10 mistake. I would rather spend the $10 and get the domain and not use it rather than really wanting it and losing it out to someone else.

Thanks.

I've heard of that happen with top hosting providers. My friend called to check the availability and the next day it was taken. The sales rep probably realized its potential and bought it himself.

They're doing it in hopes to get you to contact them and make a pretty penny selling it to you. There not Warriors they're thieves. A Warrior would not do such a thing. It's sad and unfortunate that this happens but it's a lesson learned, I won't be posting for opinions like that publicly again.

Tip: When I look for a domain name I'm interested in, I NEVER
use a domain registrar to do a search UNLESS I'm ready to order
right then and there!

If I'm curious about whether the domain is available, I'll often
type it into the browser address bar. Unregistered domains will
usually point to a 404 file not found error. Ones that are taken
will usually be redirected to a holding page (not 100%, but quite
practical).

I'm not absolutely sure why or how this may happen, but have had
domains I've researched on registrar sites get snapped up
literally within MINUTES of doing the search!

I've heard that domainers get to 'hold' new registrations for a
while without having to pay for them immediately, which allows
for such practice without breaking the bank. Check to see if
the domain is available again after a few days (my understanding
is that 5 days is the 'grace period' after which one should
commit to buying or releasing a domain) - it sometimes is.

So it may NOT be a Warrior who 'sneaked' after all!

Hope this helps.

All success

I recall the good old days when you could come into the forum and ask for help refining a domain name idea. Everyone would kick in suggestions and NO one would ever consider stealing it out from under you.

Times change.

I found this publicly listed information on plrnuggets.com:

REGISTRANT:
Shawn Brown
2000 E. Broadway 228
Columbia, Missouri 65201
United States

Registered on the 26th of October - dude was quick.

As Dr. Mani suggested, it may or may not be a Warrior that snagged your desired domains. Quite often, just performing a search for availability at many domain registrars will cause your domain to get snatched from under you. I and many other domainers I know have had this happen so often that it seems impossible to be a coincidence. I know of no "hard evidence" that registrars do in fact snatch domains from user searches, but I'm inclined to believe that it happens.

For that very reason, I only do searches at a couple of registrars that I completely trust (Fabulous, Moniker). In fact, I've had hundreds of unregistered domains sitting in my "shopping cart" at any given time, and they are still there when I need to register them.

Hi Mani,

How are you doing bro!

My understanding is that InterNic is non-profit organization( ICANN - Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers)

Internic | Whois

It is safe to search for domains there.

As sometime even a registered domain when searched in browser will not bring
any results...

Best Regards,
Mohsin

Just an alternative view... is it possible that (at least *some* of the time) someone else just happens to be looking for a name in the niche, and gets to it before you do (ie. coincidence, rather than malice)?

I don't know - maybe it's a one in a million chance, but it could happen.

That said, yeah - taking a name out from under you sucks. Is the "nuggets" domain the one that was taken? If it's any consolation, I think "nuggets" sound like something that comes out of the backend of a small furry critter !

Hi Jen,

That last comment made me laugh. Anything is possible and I had forgotten that forum is open to public. I have a forum for my fitness site that I require registration to view forum.

Anyways all is well and I have been offered my sites back :-) but I went out and got www.plrprofitmachine.com which is not shabby lol

I did come out of this with a JV so it all worked out... :-)

Hey that's great John! Was it in fact a Warrior? And were you able to get it back at cost? Nice domain

Man, that is terrible. Hope you learned the lesson of never disclosing the names that you want to get.

I would get pissed off too if it happened to me.

Gene I will plead the 5th on that one. I decided not to take the sites back as I bought the other one and since I am currently not working my budget is non existent so one domain will have to do for now until I either get a job or start making money online.

Regards of who bought sites it was a lesson learned and not to be repeated. :-) I am hoping that the JV willl be successful.
