I have some domain question I will like to ask since I will be doing major purchasing of domains for my niche. So, here goes nothing:
1. Is it best to get all the ones you can have private registration if you are starting out a new brand or just get the popular domain names (.com .net .org .biz .info .me .mobi) and you will be fine? I ask this because If my brand gets popular then I don't want others to make money by buying my brand name using a domain I didn't register with (that can have private rgistration) and then the person makes lots of $ just by selling the domain name and any other domain name related to my brand (So far I calculated their are over 100 of them!) 2. If my brand is for example called jamster and I get the domain name jamster.com but also get jam-ster.com. So, Does this make a big difference having website name like jam-ster.com and should i get other domains that have this "-" bar within the domain? Are they also able to make money just by having a popular domain but has a "-" inside it? |

If you own the brand, you can prevent anyone else from using a domain that violates the trademark.
If you do not own the brand, be sure to get permission (in writing) to include the brand name in your domain. Some brands will give permission (I have from several) many will not. |

To better answer your question, more questions...
Is this a unique brand you have created? Or an established niche? A new start-up company? Why are you so obsesses with others buying variations of your domain and making money off it. You should be concerned with your work and not somebody trying to flip my-hot-brand.biz Like was stated above, if you are creating a unique brand, trademark laws will be of limited help... varies from country to country and I don't think it has much weight when it comes to common terms. I don't think you could trademark 'homemortgages.com' If I were creating a brand, I'd pick up the .com and .net and then look at applicable and related .com's that I could pick up as well. I wouldn't bother with the other TDL's and word combos until later in the game. |

If you can afford it...go for it.
You can use a redirect for all the other names so that no matter what a surfer types in they will be directed to the site you want them to go to. I have had as many as seven different domain names pointing to the same site for the very reasons you mentioned. If you want 100 and you feel it is worthwhile investment, then do it. Just remember that at renewal time you will have to make the same decision all over again. KJ |

As has been said, buy the dot com and the dot net. If you are outside of the USA (and can afford the extra cost) buy your country suffix too, such as dot co dot uk, as in my case.
Regarding the dashes "-" you will need to use your own judgment on this. Which of your choices look the best to the human eye and which are easiest remembered. The dashes are usually better to assist the human reader to more easily remember a more complex name. Opinion seems to be divided on the effectiveness of dashes vis a vis no dashes as far as the search engines are concerned. The most important thing though, is to have your keyword, or key word phrase (appropriate to your associated website) in each of your domain names. I hope that this helps. Regards, Jeff Henshaw. |

If your domain name is a single word domain then there is no need to acquire the hyphenated version.
The important extensions you need to get hold of are the .com,.net and .org versions. Since you are based in the US getting the .us version is also recommended. There is no need to buy .me,.biz,.de,.asia ... and hundreds more to secure your brand. Chances of making money out of parking a hyphenated name is very low. Revolves |

Prouser,
Think of it like this. If your brand gets popular enough no one is going to mistake those other sites for the real thing. It seems to me you you might be suffering from a little case of Paranoia. Here are some examples to help me explain. When I want to go to google I don't go to Go-ogle and if by chance I go to gogogle I immediately hit back and go to Google. Twiter nope wrong site <back> Twitter Facebok click Facebook My point is if you have a very strong brand nobody is going to worry about the imposter sites out there. It may benefit you to buy all the domain extensions for your exact name but past that I would not worry to much about it. |

Some good advice here but before you go out and buy 100's of domain names you need to have a plan in place. For example, are you planning on selling info products, building lists, selling electronics, etc. Look at your competition and the different ways they have used domain names in that area.
You say your "brand" but is this a specific name of a product or ebooks or of a blog site, etc. As people have said earlier, if this is a name you want to try and protect then you may need to seek trademark protection. The best way is to file for a federal trademark in the United States and it will require you to file a trademark applicaiton with the Patent and Trademark Office and several hundred dollars. Then you have to correspond with a trademark examiner unless you hire a trademark attorney. If you really want a trademark, you can do it yourself but it would be best to at least get a book on it, for example, from Nolo Press. I would say that unless you are serious about protecting the name, then just get the domain names that cover the name you want. I own many domain names and my position is that ".com" is king. I never buy a domain name unless it is a .com. This is the most well known top level domain and I feel the perception of most people is that if you don't own the .com for your domain name then you are not as strong in that subject. Remeber this is just my opinion and there are many people out there that have made tons of money with a non .com domain. So you will have to make the choice you are comfortable with. Also, once I own the .com for my particular domain name, I don't worry about anyone buying the .info or whatever other tld for it due to my position above. If I have the choice, I dont usually go for the dashses in the domain name. But if I want to get into a niche where the domain names are taken up, then I will go in and start looking for domains with dashes in them. In fact, some of my domains have dashes in them because the domain name market in that niche was full. Hope this info helps. Keep posting questions and learning as there are alot of really smart people on this forum that want to help. Thanks. |
