.com or .co.uk which should I keep?

Hi,

I'm after a little advice, I recently purchased two domain names both were the same name but different top level names eg. samename.com & samename.co.uk

I set up a site and done some seo work for the .co.uk name but left the .com name untouched so it is not point to anything.

Now the .co.uk domain is ranking well on google UK but 12 places further down on google.com, my question is should I swap the domains over and apply the same tactics as before but on the .com domain? or perhaps use both domains in someway? or leave as it is?

My target market is mostly UK but the product is available to the world.

Your advice would be greatly apperciated.

Thanks
Lee

What you should have done is concentrated on the .com domain name and redirected the .co.uk to the .com. The .com extension is the most popular extension on the internet. Everyone knows about it. It doesn't matter where in the world you're from or doing business.

I recommend promoting the .com from now on.

    Thanks,
    Adam

I would suggest that you start and build the .com AS WELL AS the .co.uk

Just don't use the same content.

Basically, go into competition with yourself!!!

Why not keep them both and redirect one to the other?

That would keep someone else from buying the other version of the name, too. You'll be in control.

It's worth noting that the UK enjoys the single greatest irrational following anywhere. People worldwide frequently prefer UK companies, with absolutely no logical reason for the preference. They may prefer their own friends and family first, then their own country, then countries where they have some ancestry, but even if that goes nowhere near the UK... an awful lot of them will then go to UK companies, for no sensible reason at all. They just sort of shove the UK in there.

Another cute little fact: Americans would rather listen to an English accent than any other. If you do audio or video training materials, consider finding English voice talent.

Wherever you are,.com is still the most popular,so pay more attention to .com.Just as Adam said, use .co.uk for redirection. It's a wise choice.Maybe you will do it from the begining, but it's absolutely worthy.Better late than never.

For business use I would go with the .com domain name, because the .com extension is familiar to everyone and it is also shorter and easier to remember.People are lazy, so you need to make things as easy as possible.

If most of your target market or traffic is coming from the UK I would stick with focusing on the .co.uk as in my experience these domains rank better than .coms if you are looking at UK traffic. If you do a search for many keyword phrases and are based in the UK you will find many .co.uk ( and even .org.uk domains ranking well ) at google.

You could use the .com to focus more on any universal keyword phrases.

CDarklock - How do you do? It's absolutely spiffing here in the Uk, as I sit here with the Queen sipping a cup of tea and feed her Corgis some cavier ha ha ha

Yeah, I remember Frank K saying people seem to trust an English voice more...goodness knows why, this place is full of crooks, especially the politicians!!!
