Not Being Rude Or Anything...

But a lot of avatars on the Warrior Forum need work. I'm not going to name any names and I'm not putting anyone down either, I'm not that kinda guy, but a well taken picture or a well designed avatar can do wonders for your image. Especially on an *important* forum like this one.

Not only the avatars but usernames as well. You don't necessarily have to use your own name, you can use a pen name, your business name or a nickname but make it catchy and memorable. You really should be trying to brand yourself from the word go.

This is not your average forum. You're here because you're either an internet marketer or you want to be one. If you're going to be one then one day you're going to be selling something (product/service) and you will want to be recognised when you do.

Recognised in the best way possible that is.

Thanks,
Adam

True but they don't necessarily have to have a picture of themselves in their avatars, they can have a logo or even a stylised picture of themselves (like mine and a few others). It would still look good.

Yeah Brad, that must be really difficult being transparent when you have women fawning all over you. (Hehe.)

So much for the old saw, "On the internet, no one knows you're a dog."

I am hereby on record as being totally against a "Miss WF 2009" contest!

The whole concept is archaic, outdated, sexist and divisive.

Additionally, it is not germane to this thread.

couldn't agree more, I think the best brand in this industry is YOU as a person, as the one big advantage you have is that there is no 2 same people alike
      {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[1325856].message }}
      • quick adding on to my previous point would be that ultimately people will buy from who they like and trust...and believe me when I started making some serious money online...it was not because of some fancy sales letter, cool graphics website, avatar's etc..nope

I had NO List, NO Track Record, NO Credibility, NO Income Proof ...basically no your usual buying triggers for your prospects

But the one thing I did thankfully have was my story...and where and how I made the transition to this industry...and that can be VERY powerful...if any of you guys have ever read Mike Dillards about attraction marketing you will get what I mean...

My first ever first $1000 made in a day high ticket profit sale online was from a client who was 90% in the same boat as me when I began...and totally got what I mean't and the struggles I faced before making a mark in the industry

So personally...I respect the point of view raised when the thread was started..but DON'T let go of the one advantage you do have...which is your identity

    Interesting observation, Adam.

People seem to "see" and recognize avatars, where they exist, a bit sooner than names.

Case in point: A few months back I changed my Twitter avatar from my standard, "hatted, goateed, tropical-shirted", version to a "neatly dressed in suit, white shirt and tie--sans hat--me". I replied to a few interesting tweets from folks with whom I enjoyed a "tweetlationship".

After not receiving responses I checked my breath and deodorant. Seemed to be OK.

A couple hours later a couple people replied with, more-or-less, the same statement, "Elmer, what happened to you? I didn't recognize you."

I'm fairly sure, had I kept the "new me" avatar, in time, I would have been recognized. In the short term however it decreased response.

Possible the same thing would apply here with changed avatars.

That, of course, is not to say a few couldn't be improved upon.

      To Elmer,

You're right, people recognise avatars quickly. It's ok to change your avatar once in a while, change is good as long as the change is to another good, appropriate one (both of yours were good). People will get used to the new one after a while.

On a side note, when I entered this forum it was while being followed by an internet sociopath and a very daring move on my part to even use my "avenuegirl" name.

I know of one other person on this forum who had the same types of issues I did.

I can understand how it may be hard for some people to put themselves out there. If you are for instance a web designer, do I need to know what you look like? I'd rather see a funky little design in your avatar - unless you are really hot that is and then you better show your mug.

Steven don't say that. You're not ugly. No one is ugly. And it's not about being ugly or good looking, it's about being presentable. Whether it's a picture of you, a stylised picture or just a design, it should be presentable. A presentable picture would consist of a good posture, lighting, clarity and camera angle.

Edit: And your pic is fine!

Look at my avatar! Why so serious! There are serious internet marketers, then there are the ones riding in their speed boat, taking videos laughing, and they seem anything but "serious", but both make money.

Some people prefer to be anonymous I guess (especially if they are just browsing and not actively selling)

But having said that, I think that for active sellers, making it clear who you are (even with a stylized avatar and setting your profile homepage to your personal website) is a necessity, IMO.

You don't have to change your username, it's ok as it is. Your avatar is a bit dark but other than that it's pretty cool.

      James,

I don't think that Adam implied that either your name or avatar are ugly.

The fact that you have customers contravenes that. I suspect that you have quite a few repeat customers.

You've taken the "Brand" route as opposed to the "personal" road.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Thanks Elmer .. I do have many many repeat customers ..lol Exactly why I do not change my avatar, someone may not know me then ...

Besides if they want to see my ugly mug they can go to any number of social media sites... I figure why not scare the social media guys and not my customers ..lol

    Adam,

You look like something out of a "Peter, Bjorn & John" video.

Nothing wrong with that, of course.

In fact, I have a healthier respect for you BECAUSE of that. I like whistlin' tunes.

    Thanks,

I don't really think it matters. If I like an avatar I use it, if I want to change it I will. I'm not here to market to marketers so I don't feel I need a catchy logo as my avatar that people will associate with a product.

I know from my life experience that ego and adherence to your "image" can severely limit what you allow yourself to achieve. So I'd rather focus on making money and not worry about my image.

Well, if we have to explain what our S/N & Avatars are about, here is mine:

                  S/N: Handsome J
Name kinda stuck from some friends. One of my friends had just seen The Italian Job. Mentioned one of the characters reminded him of me while out at the bar with the rest of the crew. Of course everyone gets rowdy and breaks balls. Basically he said its because I'm a BMW guy, (kinda an enthusiast), I drive like the guy in the movie and am confident with the ladies. The last one is debatable, but I figured it's cool to have a name like Jason Statham. Irregardless the name has stuck, so I use it here.

                  Heres the flick:

                  Avatar:
My background was in Default & Commercial Real Estate before I was full force in this end of IM. One classic R.E. movie was GlennGary Glen Ross. The picture is from a scene in the movie talking about closing, and inciting other to action by drastic means.

                  Heres the flick:

As far as transparency I use my LinkedIn url in most of my stuff which links to my real name and real pic. I have some recommendations there that function as testimonials of myself also so theres my social proof.

My photo was taken with a camera phone and outdoor lighting. But I like it and I think it captures my spirit of freedom. I do like Adam's avatar, it reminds me of "Reservoir Dogs".

I love the "dogs" look too, Adam is that something you did yourself?

And thanks for kicking off this thread! I think it does not matter whether you go brand or personal (which itself is a brand, think Frank Kern) or you could combine the too like Richard Branson and Virgin.

However I do think as marketers we should make a decision, act on it and be consistent.

I am a firm believer in the idea that people buy from people (hence I went the personal route).

Using the same image/photo/brand helps with instant recognition which I believe must help with conversions as customers are likely to feel an element of comfort if they have seen your, your brand or your image around for a while.

I like real names and real pics because I think it conveys and element of trust and faith in your products (you're not likely to put your name on something that is substandard are you?)

Not everyone here sells now (or likely ever) in the IM field. Not sure how branding here will help you sell diet pills, but oK.

    Thanks,

You're right, an inappropriate avatar (opinion) and an inappropriate name (opinion) can affect the interest you develop in this or any forum.

But the way I see it, this forum has a very informal feel to it.

PERSONALLY, I think a far more pressing issue is the content some people are producing and getting away with!

Avatars can help brand you - I would advise to use your own picture as opposed to having something else.

Then again that is my 2 cents.
I always make sure I look good

Unless you rely solely on this forum to make your income I would not really care about my Avatar, as long as it is me on there and not some other person.

I really like using my own name and image for my avatar. If nothing else, so that my marketing buds can find me easy.

Plus, it doesn't hurt to let others new to the forum know who they are dealing with. So, like many Warriors, I decided to go with the "personal" brand

    I DISAGREE!

I think that you're making the assumption that everyone on this forum
wants to sell to the internet marketing niche so they need to brand themselves.

When actually the majority of people here don't have anything to do with selling
    in the IM niche.

I make alot of money a year and have Homer Simpson as my avatar and
I don't sell any make money online products anymore and I don't promote to the IM
    niche.

Not everybody joins this forum to sell stuff and build a name for themselves. Most
people just join so they can be around other like minded internet marketers and to
learn something new now and again.

And in all honesty I couldn't care less what someones avatar or username is (as
long as it's not offensive). All i care about is what the person has to say.

Well let me ask you this. Are you prone to take advice from someone who has no avatar, 25 posts, and an obscure name? Aren't you just a bit curious about the source of the information?

I don't think the niche matters - it is about how you are viewed on this forum. In addition, if I know someones niche I am better able to determine if they can help me or if I can help them with a specific campaign.

It is not as much about branding yourself as it is about having a better sense of who you can trust.

Hey avenuegirl I get what you're saying but I'm not going to judge someone
better just because they use a real pic and use their real name.

Again i look at what a person has to say and I'll make my opinion based on
          that.

Post count as you mentioned on the other hand is a different thing.

Sure I'm going to take more notice of the person who has 10,000 posts
has to say over the person who has 25 in most cases.

In fact if you think about it why would you really trust the person who
uses a real pic, their real name and is selling something in their sig link?

Because you know their main goal on the forum is to sell you something.

Can you really trust anyone on a forum?

When it comes to money and marketing the only person I really trust
          is myself.

I would also like to add that someone can have a "real" picture and "real" name and it could be totally false. So when I look at posts I do look at what they are saying and not their username or avatar.

And as far as the post count thing, for some reason people look at post count and judge that on your knowledge of a subject.

Post count does not represent or necessarily represent anyone's knowledge in a subject. Just because someone is very active in this forum does not mean he knows more than someone who may not even be a member of this forum

Someone can have a post count of 10 and give better advice on a subject than someone with 5,000 posts who may have no experience on the subject.

Oh, I know about the fake name and pic more than I wish to, LOL - but eventually those things come to the surface over time.

I was not trying to belittle anyone with a low post count either - but the combination of someone who is "fresh" here, with no pic and no reputation and no links who appears out of the blue spouting advice sometimes raises flags with me - and I'm sure I'm not alone. At the same time, there could be members with 5 posts and not much filled in to go by, but what they have posted shows some sincere effort to help others or ask some real questions and not just post a one liner - I have no issue with that.

I get what you are saying and my post was not to go against you or anybody else. I just wanted to say that just because someone is new to the forum does not mean they are new to IM.

The thing is a lot of new people come on the forum and try to take advantage and abuse the forum. If they spent that time building a relationship and a reputation they would get a lot more out of it that way.

Lol...I was not talking about celebrity photos but rather stock images.

I took out my earnings because people don't need to know that. My
point was that not everyone joins this forum to make money and create
        a brand to sell stuff.

In fact I'd hate to have my own brand and have everyone watch everything
I do online. There's 10 times more money to be made in other markets than
building a brand in the IM niche which is already seriously overcrowded.

I once put up a profile picture on a picture rating board and forgot about it. Then when I checked back later I found out that I had been voted "Most Likely To Rob A Bank". After that I decided to keep a low profile

This thread was aimed at Warrior members who are either Internet Marketers or want to be Internet Marketers in the future (because WF is IM forum). For the rest (including marketers who like to stay anonymous) it doesn't really matter what kind of avatar or name you have.

I think that should make my original post a bit clearer.

    Thanks,

Well you know even web desiging is a type of internet marketing. To get customers you do need to promote yourself don't you?

Your new avatar is hillarious. It's actually quite well designed, you're a good designer. I found the "Jerk and Fullman" line hillarious.

I always wondered, do you have some sort of connection with the "Rich Jerk?"

The whole point of this thread is that an avatar is part of package (your brand) not the whole package. And for some people (non-marketers etc) it's not even a necessity.

I think some people are missing this point that I'm trying to make.

My name is the result of choosing a word I could use as a name, and also something that wouldn't have some sort of relation. However, in wrestling, Fajeeb means idiot pretty much. I also plan on using my name to promote products and make myself easily searchable on google.

I don't really like my avatar picture because of the suit, I don't normally wear one but I wanted something to represent my personality a little.

This thread makes me think of all of the cash gifting and marketing schemes people post on Youtube, you know, when they make a video of themselves wearing their Sundays Best in front of a nice book case or something to give off a visual hint that they make a lot of money. Kind of reminds me of the guys at the mall with a pair of $300 Nike shoes that walk to their old busted car out in the parking lot that doesn't really run.

                Hi Bill,

(thanks for your *Killer (Joe)* feedback once again, by the way)

I think this thread started off as a discussion about whether or not your "avatar" is helping or hindering your entire marketing career

That question lasted a little while...until me, James, Bev and Suzanne took it in a different direction.

We're now talking about British comedy acts of the 1970's.

      Branding. That's what I meant.

When I said "deliberately changing the topic", of course I actually meant we were "rebranding the topic to make it more relevant to today's more targeted audience".

When I said "deliberately changing the topic", of course I actually meant we were "rebranding the topic to make it more relevant to today's more targeted audience".

Tsk, if you can't understand that, you really shouldn't be here...

You can have the two electric guitars, with flames and gorgeous logo if we can lose the Donnie Wahlburg Cardboard Cutout cos we just ran out of cereal boxes?

OK, Now I'm sure London is close to California.

We'll have to get this thread back on it's original topic or I'll have to break
out a lock or run to the store and get some more beer.

        I'll take the easy route!

I found a great site where you can "cartoonify" your picture. Which you can then crop and use as your avatar if you like.

BeFunky.com - Photo effects with one click, Turn your photos into artwork. - It's free.

    Thanks,

My previous one was a bit too photoshopped (so I could have a solid background).

My current one is when I took the family to Walt Disney World. We had a blast, but I was tired. It was a kind of contented tiredness that is similar to what I experience in IM sometimes.

Don't know if it will be deemed "acceptable". I've received a few comments on it. Not sure if that's a good thing, or not.

    All the best,
    Michael

Ask at the Help Desk which can be found in the menu at the top of each page, they'll change it when they've the time.

Well of course name and avatar may be important but it is no more important then the informative quality of the posts you write and services you provide. Your contribution to the community should be the deciding factor.

    Adam,

I think some people don't understand the importance of the avatar neither of the username.

It happened to me when I was starting out, it was a big mistake I made.

On the other hand, there are people who prefer to hide their identity

    Thanks!
