Default RIP GeoCities many an Imer started in your dimly lit streets.

It looks like today was the official end of GeoCities.

With millions of visitors and tons of traffic you would have thought Yahoo would have found some way to keep it around?

I remember back in the day that it was not totally unfashiopnable to actually own a GeoCity site or two.

I can actually say that I even made a buck or two on those dimly lit streets

RIP

Wow after all these years .... I never did make a geocities one but I did make several tripod sites like 14 years ago ... Free Website Hosting - Tripod free website templates to make your own free website - I see they still kicking, have not visited that site in many many years.

I made my first Geocities website when I was 13, I think (I'm 24 now). I also had tripod, and...I can't remember the name of the other free site builder back then! Fortune City something?

I even tried to sell some of my old books on there back then, and dabbled in eBay selling. I guess I always had it in me

Sorry to hear that Geocities is gone

I started my first website on GeoCities, back in the day... it was devoted to the Hellraiser movies.

It will be missed, in its own way.

Yep Tripod was another one, I was trying to think of that one. At one time there must have been 5 or 6 big sites where you could get a little bit of web realestate for free.

I can even remember maxing out my amount of space on one and linking rest of my site to another free provider.

James,
There used to be one called Trailer Park or Trailer Trash or something, they tried to copy GeoCities with street names and lot numbers and all .. You remember the name ??

James

P.S. Oh the good old days with the free website wars ...lol They started giving more space, adding more features ...

My friends and family call me Geo. They were quite impressed with my GeoCities sites. I also did homestead a bit, not to mention AOL HomeTown Those were the days

Anyone remember Fortune City?

When they first started up (1994 or something) they actually sent you a book in the mail about the "city" you just joined.

Those were the days!

nope, can't remember the name of that one but a web search brought up another one - AngelFire, which apparently shared the same back-end software as Tripond

Good ol GeoCities. I had some sites on there. And Tripod. Learned HTML and coded them by hand cause their editors sucked. Ahh...the good ol days!

Weird that they would just let it die. Why not sell it off or something at least.
