Let the Debate Begin: Complicated Domain Name Question

okay, so here is a decision I have to make. The ".com" for my domain has been taken... so do I

a) get the ".net" version
b) use hyphens and use a ".com" (word1-word2-word3.com)
c) get the ".info" version (makes sense since i provide info on my site and im not selling anything)

Type in traffic is likely to be low for my domain even if I was able to get the ".com". I am primarily looking for it to show up on the first page of google for people looking for a certain service in their hometown. In essence, it is kind of like a directory.

So what should it be folks?

I would go with the net version, that's my own preference. The com version with hypens is ok either. However, info domains do not perform well like others in my experience.

Afterall, the position where you will see your site will not be because of its name or extension, it will be based on your seo efforts.

If you are serious about the niche I would lock up as many versions as you can afford. Net and .info and.. variations on the .com version. ie: spelling errors, like words such as autos and cars and automobiles, etc.

Google does this. Of course they have billions to spend. If you type in: Gogle.com or Gooogle.com you'll still get to Google.com .

I agree with ademmeda. Your SEO will tell the tale. Your domain name only plays a small part in the overall rankings. If there won't be much or any word of mouth or type-in traffic, get the best name you can with dashes, .net...or whatever.

If the dot com is a parked page and/or not ranking, then go for the dot net.

There is a sneaky way to get the .com too, but I won't reveal it here. It takes time though. Don't PM me though folks, I'm not sayin how.

My idea would be to lock up everything but the .com, then work on getting that. Perhaps buying it, perhaps waiting until it expires, etc. It all depends on how vital that domain is to you.
