Ways to use Google voice for your IM efforts...

I just received a google voice invite and after messing around with it for about an hour I am pretty impressed. Google voice is basically a phone service but without any phones. You can forward calls to your phone, get voicemail, send text messages, etc.

It works much like your email programs where you see the messages that have come in (both voice and text). Voice mail is automatically transcribed. There is a callback button, block button, etc...

The thing that makes this all great is that you can either use your own phone OR get a new number. This means you can have an 'office' phone number for your business.

Here is how I plan to use Google voice for my IM efforts:

1 - A lot of my stuff is GeoTargeted for my hometown in which I don't live in (but want to move back to - long story). When I signed up for Google Voice I got the option to choose a phone number. Because I want to 'appear' to have a local presence I chose a number with a local area code and prefix.

Now I have the option to send all calls from the local number to voicemail or forwarded to my cell phone. Right now I have calls forwarded.

2 - Voicemail is transcribed AND able to be downloaded. This is perfect for testimonials. I can now have people call and give testimonials so I can post the audio and text (will use screen capture).

3 - Can use texting now for product support OR coaching

4 - I can place a 'call me now' badge on my sales pages so people can call me and ask questions. I THINK it works by having my cell number call their number but the number from Google voice shows on caller ID. Will research more.

Just some thoughts after using this for an hour. I'm sure more will come soon.

I love my Google Voice number and have put the call me now badge on my site. I like the gmail like interface for my voicemails and have used the text message functions successfully also. The transcribing is not perfect, but cool enough. I think you will enjoy it.
