Default Can anyone explain Alexa ranking?

Although none of my sites have great Alexa rankings I have two that rank at 1,001,000 and 801,000.

What I don't understand is that the better ranked has less content, less back-links and less visitors. Trying to work out where the 25% difference lies is very confusing.

Is there a way to influence Alexa rankings and do thay actually mean anything?

You might not like what I say - but I believe it.
Build it, make money, then build some more
Some old school smarts would help - and here's to Rob Toth for his help. Bloody good stuff, even the freebies!

It is a generic measurement/rough estimate of the amount of daily traffic you receive.

Alexa calculates this by the number of people using the alexa toolbar & equivalents, and then ranks you accordingly. Usually it is not too useful information until you get into the higher rankings (i.e., 1-100,000)... but based on what you said, I would be able to 'guess' that you probably get 200-300 unique visitors/day.

If I was doing competitive analysis on your business, it would give me a bit of a success indicator, and/or desire for your particular market/niche. Of course it wouldn't be the only tool I would use to judge the success of your business, but that would help. And that is one thing that a lot of people probably use that information for.

The long and short of it is this:

There are ways to manipulate Alexa rankings.. but it doesn't really mean anything..

I don't pay attention to Alexa rankings...

They are an Old School ranking.. I'm not saying all Old School is useless, but the Alexa wing of the old school is

Peace

you might want to consider Compete.com as a measuring tool.. it is way more accurate and more informative than Alexa
