I am using the google keyword tool to look up my key words. The thing is I don't know what paramaters to be looking for...as far as search volume and advertiser competition.
Is there a range of numbers you should look for that makes a keyword good? Thanks for your help... |

I like to see if there is any user generated content page (like youtube or eza) on the first page of google for a specific keyword (without quotes)
If there is, and the keyword has good searches, I go for it. I hope this helps. MorganRichman |

Two ways I check competition for my website is by doing a keyword search in quotes and using the allintitle:keyword command.
The allintitle is great because you know how many sites are targeting that keyword in the title which is likely the keywords they are targeting for the whole page. Usually anything under 500 is easy pickings. For search volume it really comes down to the particular keyword. If it's a buying type keyword then it doesn't really matter as long as the competition is low. Those will be much easier to get sales from and you can use all sorts of variations for it. If you are only talking about advertising using ppc I'm no expert but I look for keywords in my budget that are good with as low of competition as I can find. |

A simple way to check the competition for a keyword is simply do a Google search using the word or phrase. Here's an example: work at home
A Google search shows 326,000,000 pages. Obviously there's a ton of competition for that phrase, and it's very unlikely you will ever get close to the front of the line. I like to find words and phrases with a couple of million pages or less. That way you have a fighting chance. Good luck. |

month for any chosen keyword, the higher the number the better. If you find one over 3000 - brilliant! To find the exact number of searches for any keyword at the Google External Keyword Tool, once you've put in the main keyword in the little white box and filled in the captcha code, clicked on Get Keyword Ideas - on the next page that shows up, look to where it says: Global Monthly Search Volume, just to the right of that, you'll see Match Type and in the little box just below it, by default this is set to Broad. Use the little drop down menu and click on Exact and the numbers will automatically change to give you the exact numbers instead. Apply the above paramators, over 500 searches minimum for any given keyword. Now open up a new tab on your browser. Go to Google.com and in the search box type in your keyword inside "inverted commas" and click Search or your Enter Key. See the pale blue bar at the top of the page? If that displays a number of less than 200,000 results, the keyword is probably well worth going for. If it's below 50,000, snap it up quick. If it's below 30,000, no hesitation at all - Go For It! The lower the number of competing websites going after a highly search for keyword / long tailed keyword, the better IF the search numbers are there too, per month. Hope this helps and good luck! OK use Google Adwords to find the total number of searches for the keyword. Please remember to ignore partner searches as those are places like Youtube. For me a good rule of thumb is that about half of total searches are partner. Those do not convert as well.

You are going to get a lot of answers telling you to go for low competition keywords. DO NOT neglect those keywords! There is a reason why certain keywords have higher competition...it's because they are often the best converting keywords. Just dont tell everybody

A really quick and basic way is to type the keyword into google and see if an ezine article or squidoo lens comes up. If it does then the keywords not too competitive. it's not science but it's an indication.

There are 2 ways to use your keywords..
1)Main Site, look for keywords with EXACTLY more than 3000 monthly search(use Google keyword tool) 2)Articles,, any keywords from 300-1000 MOnthly search.. To analyze your competition, go to google and type this code allintitle:"your keywords". If you find less than 1,000 competition then it's good.. Then search google for your keywords without any code..and then analyze the strength of your competition..Look for the number of backlinks, domain's age, and also find out whether the keyword is in the url of the competing sites or not.. If there're less than 500 backlinks and the're no KEYWORDS in your competition's URL within the TOP 10 search results, then you can consider targeting the KEYWORD!! My 2c.. |

Thanks--I am going to check out the two above sites. Also, when I search google for the competition amount using the actual search toolbar, do you place the keywords in quotes or without quotes? I have one keyword that has 7k searches in quotes, but then jumps WAY higher (couple hundred thousand, maybe a million) without.
What exactly does the all in title tag do? With that I get 497. Thanks!! |
