It would actually depend on how much type-in traffic the original domain gets. There will always be a small percentage of users actually typing a misspelling and entering a parked page and clicking. The recent craze behind acquiring a lot of .cm domains has been to capitalize on the .com typos.

If it's a typo on a trademark, stay away.

If it's a typo on a common word or phrase, then it could be worth it. It just depends on how much type-in traffic there is for that word or phrase and how common the misspelling is.

I'll sometimes enter keyword dot com just to see what's there. I don't really use it as a first resort, and I don't know how many people do, but all you really need is enough to make it worth more than $10 a year.

I actually optimize some blog posts for a misspelled word because the search traffic is higher than for it spelled correctly

Why? I register trademark domains all the time. I'm willing to take them down if the owner wants me to, but until then I'll leverage their brand for traffic.

Actually never had this issue... of course, I only use this for Adsense, not affiliate sites (where they can look where the traffic is coming from and see your domain)

That's ASKin' for trouble.
