Really can use advice on marketing my tourism company

Hi everyone,

Started a tourism company 4 months ago. I was able to get 2 sales a month in. I do bicycle tours in my local city. I offer 4 scenic tours and they both include photos & video after the ride. In addition to this, I have a free Saturday group ride that is more intense training for road cyclist. Its a 30-mile ride with close to 2000ft of climbing.

Moreover, I just introduced group tour that I want to market to corporate companies. I offer team building activities, along with all-inclusive food. I just finished the page for it on my website and I'm just not sure what the best way is to market the page, I don't have a large list of emails. I only have 30 subscribers to my list so far. Hotels I have been marketing to and now I need to market my group tour packages to more businesses. I wanted some insight for best practice. Would love to hear from you all.

I love blogging RS. Super way to show off your cycling knowledge, so clients can literally buy in to your tour by trusting you and your free advice. Publish helpful posts about tours, cycling and free content clearly related to your business. People dig the free content and sign up. It takes work, and patience, but blogs rock as business growers because you have so much flexibility with branding, content and monetizing too.

Thanks so much man. Road cycling is my passion. I also do a great deal of bicycle touring and bikepacking which led me to traveling around the world cycling. The conversation I had with myself on the road was to be able to help people help themselves, get fit through using cycling as a means and to also share my passion of touring which is why I started this company.

I have a blog and a YouTube channel that I built up before I started this company and it has many followers. I post YouTube videos and promote my company a lot. I will be pushing more blog post that is for sure. I really want to build a community which is why I started the free group road ride on Saturday. I have 8 people on that so far. But in addition to that I need to still make sales off my tours in order to operate. I know that I'm top speed right now . I'm 5 months in.

Well I wouldn't call it losing. I did invest around $300 for ad spend across Facebook and Google to test things out and built audience attention. I did a lot of the work on my own building content for my social platforms to create. I think I need to get the word out on the streets. To answer your question logically though... yes.

  • It looks like here you also need to do some lead generation. The best people to reach, if you want corporate clients, is to approach the HR in these companies.

But before reaching out to them, do you research. Focus on companies that encourage healthy and athletic lifestyles or those that value work-life balance. And make sure to personalize your cold emails.

Thank you! Would you invest in the Click Funnels as someone else here mentioned? They have a 14-day trial. I built my own landing page for my tours on my website and more specifically my group tour package that I plan to sell to companies. Not sure If click funnels require like a list beforehand to funnel the landing page into. Not sure how they do it.

Thank you for the kind words. 50k on ad spend across Facebook, Instagram/ twitter is along and may not be possible this year. I was testing things out with a very minimal budget. I boost Instagram post for $2 daily. As for Facebook ads I was doing $10 a day for videos that I have created of the tours. I can share some of those with you as well.

Ideally you are new and It will take little bit more time to expand and grow your business. The best you can do you need to use paid promotion for your business specially Facebook and google ads. Also follow another marketing channels to digitize as much as you can.

I see. Thanks... I have a facebook ad audience but haven't run ads in a bit. Perhaps I should start running them again. I can setup an offer like 15% off their first tour.

Make sure customers can find you online and give promotion, and get customer reviews on your website. One thing that will give a free pass or if you give to play free games, then you can get the customer attraction and more sales.

AirBNB Experiences and Video Marketing could be interesting avenues to explore..
Funneling traffic onto their platform may help boost your ranking and bring organic traffic from their users as well.

I've hosted quite a few events on Eventbrite and when we run campaigns we've had about 20% of the sales come directly from their platform. AirBNB Experiences could have similar effects.

Thank you! I am on AirBNB Experiences. The thing is with that is they don't let you promote video. I do have a profile on there with images of a specific tour that I offer. I do have a lot of video content that I promote. It get's the most views out of all of my other content. I have been posting it on Instagram promoting it there, IGTV and I will not explore more using Facebook Ads. I just don't know the best targeting strategy. Most people will say to test things out because there is no exact formula. But I do need specifics as to narrowing my target to just my city, or broader. I know little FB ads but would love here some insights from a guru.

I can offer explicit advice as I'm a traveler and I also created a travel website.

Regardless of which city you live in, contact the local tourism bureau as every city has them. Just insert the following phase into Google: "visit your city"

If you live in Savannah Georgia type: "visit Savannah"

The official tourism website will typically typically be ranked in the top 3 results and will normally have the "visit" keyword in there.

Next, is the important part, and I shall name t the brochure marketing soup. Find the contact details on their site and arrange an in person meeting to see how you can partner with them. A simple way is to create a simple tri fold brochure which you can literally do yourself in the next hour or so. Here's a free Microsoft Office template: https://templates.office.com/en-au/brochures

These travel bureaus love working with locals. Your goals should be to get your brochures in the visiting centers and also getting a link to your site from the official tourism website.

You can replicate this method A LOT. It really depends on which city you live in and the type of people you're targeting. For example, if you're targeting tourists then find ALL of the top tourist destinations in your area and repeat the previous method.

Wow, thank you so much for this. I already did what you said on google and found 4 local media tourism business supporting tourism experiences. I called them all, got emails and left voice messages. I will have to follow up on feedback I get and it won't stop here.

As for the brochure templates. Thank you for that. I have a flyer that I designed in full color and printed a bunch that I dropped off at local hotels. I will now design a brochure with one of these templates and also get that printed.

Since you're focused on local tourism, I'd spend money on local SEO. You should also work with local businesses and micro influencers in your niche. Here's an idea I'm currently fiddling with - you can search out Ben Adkins $10 time bomb.

How do I build a large social media following? I have the content I just don't have all the follwers. My previous Instagram that is cycling related has 520 followers and my new business has 73 followers. Both are cycling and related to each other. I don't know how to grow it. Any suggestions?

You are on the right track. What remains is for you to inform the public about what you are doing . Ensure that your site is featured by Yelp and Tripadvisor . If you succeed, you will be sure that you will get enough clients.

I'm writing today to tell you that those aren't the most effective approaches. Plenty of tourism corporations are advertising and marketing themselves in fun and innovative ways that are each more green and more effective than what you're currently doing. There are many opportunities in view that, consistent with Google; "most consumers aren't logo-devoted in these moments. For instance, 78% of enjoyment travelers haven't determined what airline they will journey with, and eighty two% haven't chosen the accommodation issuer they'll e-book with when they first start considering a experience. You might be thinking that this is not a creative marketing concept, however it is available in at number one as it's the bottom for the rest of your advertising and marketing activities. Without an effective advertising plan you're driving blind.

I didn't read all of the replies, so my apologies if these suggestions have already been made.

List yourself as an Experience provider in your city via AirBnB and TripAdvisor.

Use FB ads to target business owners, executives, and secretaries in your area who ALSO like biking. Serve them video ads selling your corporate team-building retreat.

Thank you for your reply. Others have also suggested that I do the same. I finished a Facebook ad action plan not long ago. My plain is to serve them up late February as we roll into the Spring season.

    UPDATE:

Hi everyone! Thought I'd drop in again and make a post. February will be coming onto my first year in business. I still haven't made any new books yet and I believe it can be due to the weather change here in new york city. Lots of people tend to stay indoors during the colder months here and I have been thinking about how I can wrap my head around this and plan my business to succeed for the spring/ summer 2020 year. So far below are things that I have been up to...

    Work Performed

    • Listed my four tours on AirBNB Experiences/ Created Trip Advisor Account
    • Trying to seek a Bank to do business with
    • Created blog post that is relative to my business
    • I have a strong social media presence in terms of creating original content
    • Printed Fliers and sent them to hotels

    To Do

    • Get bookings = sales
    • Brochure design
    • Content for fall/winter season *Ideas welcome
    • Reach out to non-profit locally and offer free Central park bike tour with photos and video
    • Cycling safety blog post
    • Figure out a way to prepare for the spring/ summer during the winter season
    • Test out Facebook ADs for holiday sales

As you can see I have a lot of work to do. I am excited that I am approaching my first year. However, I'm not excited that I am not getting bookings. The weather is not to blame although it is pretty cold outside. people are still out riding. I wonder if it were warm all year round how that will affect my business. Anywho, I wanted to update everyone who has chimed in to offer advice. If you have any more to offer please do. I will be making more posts as I progress throughout the year. Good luck to you all in your personal endeavors.

I help my friend start his local sail charter business. He does that full time now and makes about 400K a year. He started at 0 in 2013. We started by promoting with Groupon, Blogging, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. He gets people in the door with Groupon...yeah he would lose margin but he is able to get re-book's, referrals, and tips. Plus the upsells.... He took photos and posted YouTube videos for each sail. He started with 1 boat he now has 4. He has a great personality and that's why 75% of his clients refer people to him, or re-book.

I was dating an esthetician and I help her build her local business do the same thing.

    Best of luck

Your next play is simple, create what Brian Dean of Backlinko.com calls a Really Long List (RLL). What you do is create one with at least 100 things tourists can see in your city. Then reach out to Area businesses and ask them if they would like to be added to the list in exchange to them linking to it. Like bike rental companies, souvenir shops, private tour attractions (that cost money) and even restaurants. Tell them you will add a banner to it if they share your post on social media every few weeks. This will get backlinks to your page and will generate organic and referral traffic. Make sure you add a banner for your tours on the page too.

Thank you for your reply. I will look into doing this as well. Can I pick your brain on another matter? Feel free to give me advice on how to promote this and get it in front of the right people.

I built a Corporate retreat tour. It's specialized in targeting small corporate companies to work on team building. The idea is to get employees out of the office for a day of exploring the local scene on bike. We start off at a cafe/ restaurant for breakfast and meet and greet. Afterward, we pick up our bikes next door as the bike shop is right there. After that ride around the big Central Park here in NYC and I take pictures of them riding and enjoying the sun making stops at historical sites for photos. We then do our first challenge on the other side of the park which is really fun. I think they will like the challenge. After that, we ride to a non-profit organization that I am connected with for a build a bike team building session where we break into groups and build a bicycle to donate to a child in need. After that, we ride to a local brunch location for food and then ride back to the bike shop to return the bikes.

I'm trying to figure out how I can best promote this. I build a landing page with all the details and everything. I just don't know who to get it in front of.

Sounds like a good idea but if it were me I would not promote it as "Team Building" Bike riding is solitary. Even in a group you are on your own. There is no "Team". So promote the same ride but as something else. like "Bike Exploration Thursday"

It's interesting I just saw this as I had just came across a post/podcast this morning about how someone developed a walking tour guide service in Washington D.C. . The main source of his business comes from "YouTube". It sounds like you already are going down that path but improving video quality & importantly "video SEO" will magnify viewership, subscriber numbers & customers. What's great is all of this can be done without spending money on advertising. That doesn't mean you shouldn't test some advertising elsewhere though.

Anyway - here's the link to the article/podcast at https://www.sidehustlenation.com/mar...ss-on-youtube/

You'll be able to see exactly what he is doing with his website & youtube channel (links to other social media at bottom of his site). Note the additional ways he is pulling extra revenue streams on top of tour guides fees.

I saw someone mention Brian Dean at Backlinko & he has some top-notch info about using YouTube at https://backlinko.com/hub/youtube

Hope you get some ideas here.

One of the best options is to give some additional bonuses for airline flights (tickets, etc.), in my opinion.

I've always been a huge proponent of using software tools to help me manage marketing campaigns holistically. I'm using a tool that can launch multiple channel campaigns like Facebook, Twitter all in one button.

Ok, I have owned a couple of companies like this in Nth Qld and across to Broome, Don't forget that you are selling to people....
So you NEED to do your "Marketing" BEFORE you do your "PROMOTION", there is a big difference between these two crucial areas of every business.
From your info, you have a couple or a few different markets here and you need to clearly define each one, this is essential especially in something like "PUSHbike"tours, that can be a lot of cardio for people, (how many heart attacks have they had yet)'

Part A) Started a tourism company 4 months ago. I was able to get 2 sales a month in. I do bicycle tours in my local city. I offer 4 scenic tours and they both include photos & video after the ride.
For A), This is a good, make sure you do your "Marketing", Marketing is the definition of a market of the different areas and sectors within it.
here, I can see quite a number of different sections. I don't know where you are geographically so will take a shot in the dark.
A lot of people will ride a bike (get REALLY comfortable GEL seats for your clients), it goes slowly, you can pull up at any time and discuss whatever it is that you are looking at, A statue, a bay maybe that Capt Cook was in etc, this is good for people who basically have NO cardio exercise in their lives, you can market to people like this directly and work you tour to keep hills to a minimum etc.
You have families, you know Mum, Dad and the kids, they will want to see different things so change the tour course.
One really important thing NEVER be afraid to ASK your clients how you can improve or add to the "Experience" in a short time you will get some really good pointers. (you'll also get some silly ones, but hey thats what you get when dealing with a cross section of the public).
OK now "PROMOTION", This is the other part of a good business, once you have defined areas of your business, ie, age, health, fitness, interests etc THEN you have to promote these areas.
This does not mean to do all of it on the web, NO not at all. People LOVE contact with other people.
Hit your feet, GO to the Hotels, Motels, Backpackers places, by all means take flyers to hand out but get contact with the owners and managers who can be whats known in selling as 'A CENTRE OF INFLUENCE' These people can make or break you, they can send people your way, give you a heads up of what they were asking to see or whats in the area. Yes you may have to slip the m Tenner or so, send flowers (if women) or footy tickets. You do this and they will NEVER forget you.
Do this and in time, a short time you will have all the work you can handle.

In addition to this, I have a free Saturday group ride that is more intense training for road cyclist. Its a 30-mile ride with close to 2000ft of climbing.
Ok This group is totally different and a totally different clientele, still use the above and it will build the business.
