Since so many warriors here were so pleased with hostgator, I set up a business account there for a client's website there. At first, it was great. However, problems soon began, namely not being able to open the website on the same day of the project completion deadline.
From contacting Hostgator live technical support (which is a great feature of theirs), I found out there was a problem with the box, probably a hardware issue. While this kind of account has its own IP, it isn't on a dedicated server, so others would have been affected by this issue as well. Anway, I'm not necessarily faulting Hostgator (they didn't invent entropy), but I would say that everything on a site should be backed up in more than one place. Also, one should be ready for this kind of situation and have a plan B (eg a duplicate of the website on another server that you can point the DNS to whenever you need to). |

Indeed.
On a sidenote for HG users reading. The guys on live support only have limited ability to deal with certain issues and alot of the time their answer is "submit a support request about this" 2 things I've learned about that is: 1. Sometimes its better to submit a support ticket about serious issues like this immediately. 2. Then you can jump on live support, see if they can fix it, and if they CAN'T you can ask them to try and escalate the priority of your ticket so that it gets looked at faster. Some reps tell you they can't do that, but they CAN ![]() Andrew |

Hi,
Hardware issues can happen and while they do prepare for this, they do have to have time to implement the fix. All hosting services run into this. The thing with HG, at least they could tell you the problem straight away. At least you know what you are dealing with. Not sure how calling from your location works, but I have used the 800 number a couple of times to resolve problems. You normally get someone who can do something, or at least transfer you to someone who can. Have been very happy with HG since I signed up with them. Thanks, John |
