Default Does A Closed Affiliate Program Work Better?

Here is where I am coming from with this.

Let's say you come up with this really great high end physical product.

You know that affiliates are going to be chomping at the bit to sell it, but
you don't want everybody and their grandmother promoting it for tons of
reasons that I won't get into here. You experienced product creators
know what they are.

Will having a closed affiliate program...

1. Generate more interest and get more people asking you to promote your
product?

or

2. Will it end up having people say, "Screw him, if he wants to be that
way I don't have to promote his lousy product" and ultimately end up
getting the person far fewer affiliates than he expected?

I have never done this, which is why I am asking. I have no experience
with affiliate programs outside of tossing up a product on Clickbank.

So, if anybody actually has any personal experience with closed affiliate
programs and how well they work or don't work, I'd love to hear your
stories.

Thanks.

Steven,

If someone is going to cop an attitude because I decided to make an affiliate program closed, then I wouldn't want that person promoting my stuff anyway.

I mean, if they are that stubborn, how are they going to be with the customers? I'm not willing to take that chance.

What I do is create a JV account for an affiliate prospect and them email them with all the stats and info, letting them know that I manually created an account for them. This has had pretty good results.

And it let's you decide whether or not you want a certain person promoting your stuff. I'm sure you have names you wouldn't nt to have to write a check for. LOL
