Techniques for obtaining good SEO clients

As an SEO do you have process you go through to attract your clients. Obviously I do not expect people to spill their secrets on how they get clients, but what methods have people found the most successful?

Cold calling? cold emailing? face-to-face networking?

Also, which industries have you found most receptive to SEO?

There's a lot you can do my friend! You'll find more than you can handle browsing through the WF if you search for "offline gold" "client generation", etc.

Out of all you mentioned, if it's in your comfort zone, nothing beats face to face networking, but most people seem to be attracted to methods that involve the prospect calling you through direct mail, live seminars, etc.

If you're dedicated to doing this, the easiest close is 'proof'. Create a list of potential prospects and then get ranked for a term they'd be interested and then contact them. No resume/experience/sales pitch needed when they're staring at a top 3 listing for a keyword that makes sense for their business.

One other thing to note - while a lot of people talk about closing local business owners, which is great, you'll get much more bang for your buck going after prospects with already established sales generation on the web. They know the value of good video marketing / seo / list building and what it can do for their business. They're also willing to pay a lot more for it since money's already coming in the door, but you better deliver the goods
