Default Is Anyone Still Using Directory Submissions?

Just wondering if anyone bothers submitting their sites to directories anymore, I don't hear alot about it in the forum, and also heard Matt Cutts mention that Directory links have been given less attention by google, since all the scammy viagra folks were mass submitting to all the directories they could find.

I'm debating whether to pick up a copy of Mike's Directorybot, but wondering if it is really worth it, What are your thoughts?

I've found that Directory submission, while still effective, is losing weight to methods such as Social Media bookmarking.

Yes, it sure does seem that way. My only concern is getting on the wrong side of google and other engines, that's the last thing any website owner would want.

submit to smaller "niche" search directories, you can do this manually since you only need to submit once and there are only about 100 or so decent niche directories.

I get traffic from smaller niche directories.

I use Directorybot and it takes about 5 minutes to submit to a couple hundred non-captcha directories. Haven't ever tested not using it, though, but I'm sure it's worth 5 minutes

But if you submit to a number of low level links...couldn't it potentially hurt your sites ranking.

Hey James,

How do you go about doing this? Like how do you find these directories, determine which ones to post at, then actually post to them?

I am really on the edge for buying directorybot, that is why I wanted peoples opinions first, to help make my decision.

Do you have to create accounts on the directories in directorybot?

I have realized that it is better to get links from even those places which offer no-follow links but where there is a lot of footfalls. This would help get better exposure, more people writing about your site and thus more backlinks than you can build yourself.

No, you never need to create accounts. Some sites require human validation, but most don't and I just submit to those (it's a few hundred, done on autopilot).

I always start my sites off with this tool for directory submissions, create/submit an RSS feed with RSSbot, a spun article to blogs/article directories, and some social bookmarks. After 2-3 weeks I'll check in on it and then start doing some deep linking. Almost always I see good results when I check back in

Cheers,

Scott

So it is safe to submit to a bunch of directories and RSS feeds all at one time?

I already have a set list ... I use my list to post because it is not that hard and it really does not require any automation.

Most directories are low quailty and obesessive directory submission is also quite the waste of time. If you can find a high quality directory with a tagging system that's a golden directory but right now bookmarking sites are the new directories and most have a tagging system in place.

Interesting you say that, as I just watched your Youtube vid on socialbookmarking, and you cleary say you are staying away from bookmarking due to some tests you made??? Have you had a change of mind?

I'm using directory submission. You can use addurl.nu site to submit your site to various other directories. Directory submission is one good way of creating links for yourself.

I think the best way to determine if directories help at all is do a search and see if you can find any of them indexed in Google for your site/keyword, if they are showing up then it is probably a good guess they help a little.

Yes I have found that because alot of others aren't using directories other search engines pick it up and then Google grabs it as other engines pushing it and its free no pay per click which gets around some of the silly things Google does without notice
