What Qualifies YOUR USP?

Happy daylight savings everyone. Yes, I am up earlier than I should be.

If you clicked into this thread and did not know what "USP" stands for, it is the Unique Selling Point.

When you create a product, or when you are looking to buy one, it is that one thing that takes the producer or buyer over the edge. That special thing that makes things different from the rest.

My questions of the day are:

Product Makers:

How many USP's do you work to incorporate into a product?

What is the lowest or highest number you have had?

Do you ever consider the fact that "you made it" to be the USP?

Is providing materials in 2 different formats enough of a USP - or do you think this needs to be pumped up with some more?

Is there a generic number of USP's that works best, or do you think it is entirely product dependent for the number a product should have?

Product Buyers:

What is an example of a USP that triggered you to hit the buy button? Is it more important who made the product, or being familiar with who sold it to you, or do you not really pay attention to any of this and just buy if it will solve a problem?

In general, for the products you buy - would a "get out of jail free" card that allowed you an opportunity to talk to someone on a phone or get a real detailed email from the product creator be for the most part something you would love to see on every product, or do you think the product needs to deliver everything out of the box and you have no desire to communicate with anyone?

A great USP can create a business. I'm often confused on what a USP actually is. The standard example of Dominos - "You get fresh, hot pizza delivered to your door in 30 minutes or less -- or it's free." is also stated as an irresistible offer by Mark Joyner.

It is said that business took off for Dominos using that USP and it stomped the competition.

Why don't more businesses come up with something so simple and powerful? I don't know. I think its not as easy to come up with a killer USP as it first sounds.

Dominos actually abandoned that when it went national because it proved undoable. It's not a USP either. That's just a guarantee. The ultimate test is whether your competitor can duplicate it without landing in court with an intellectual property lawsuit. If they can, it's not a USP.

I'm working on a product for creating a USP at the moment, as it's been the cornerstone of my copywriting business (which would explain why I'm reading a four year old thread to find out what my potential customers are saying about it lol)
