Default You Can Teach An Old Geezer New Tricks!

The thread I’m starting is somewhat related to this one, which you should read first:

http://www.warriorforum.com/main-internet-marketing-discussion-forum/139606-50-100-300-500-1000-day-heres-how.html

I didn’t want to get too far off topic in that one, but I’m so damn proud of Ken, I wanted to share a funny story about him that I’m sure we could all probably relate to…

Way back in the day (circa late 2004 or so), I get an email out of the blue from this good old boy from Texas looking to do a JV with me. He’s thinking that with my programming talents, he and I ought to be able to do some business together.

Now, I didn’t know him from Adam, but he seemed like a nice enough guy, so I emailed him back and asked him what he was bringing to the party. I explained to him that in a JV, everyone involved has got to add some kind of value to the deal, so asked him what he had to offer.

I get a reply back that sounded as excited as a puppy at dinnertime, telling me that, oh yeah, he had some great things to bring into the deal like a domain name and Site Build It. So can we do some business? With Site Build It? That's it?

I could see right off who was going to be stuck doing all the work

I let the guy down easy, because he seemed to be a genuinely nice person and I didn’t want to hurt his feelings. And he took it well – more importantly, he didn’t give up. One evening, I get a call from him on Skype, so he could introduce himself. Later he started emailing me asking questions…and finally worked up to asking me to mentor him.

Now over the years, he’s made some mistakes (don’t we all), but he’s owned up to them and not repeated them. I’ve bailed him out a time or two when he got in over his head, and as he said, needed a swift kick in the butt now and then. The important thing here is…

He never gives up

Now he’s running a successful online business and always working on growing it further, branching out into new areas and is always willing to try new things.

There are times now, when I ask him to mentor me about specific things he’s planning – and we’ve grown far beyond the original mentor-student relationship. There are times when he provides me with invaluable insight into things I’m planning that I’ve not considered.

He never gives up

And don’t for a moment think the road he followed was an easy one – he struggles with technology (although he knows a hell of a lot more today than he did in the past), he got a lot of resistance from his family for pursuing it and like all of us, he’s struggled with personal issues and heartache along the way.

His efforts, his perseverance and his positive outlook has since allowed his wife to retire from her job, they’ve moved to a new home, and his wife has gone from complaining about his time spent on the computer to only wanting to know how much he has in his PayPal account

He never gives up

Ironically, one of the family members who tried to discourage him from IM is now one of my students, anxiously looking to repeat Ken's success, LOL!

Ken has focused his efforts on building a profitable, sustainable business that will be around for years to come. No one, including me handed it too him - he's earned every bit of his success.

For those of you struggling to make it now, Ken Leatherman is the epitome of what you can accomplish, if you simply do not give up.

I had the privilege of meeting Ken in person a couple of weeks ago in North Carolina. He's just as lovely in person as you imagine him to be if you had not met him. I hope he is a presenter at next year's meeting. That will be very cool.

While "lovely" isn't necessarily the word I would use to describe Ken, he is definitely one of the hardest working, most thoughtful and totally decent men I've ever met.

Although Ken and I have "known" each other online for a couple of years we had never met in person until the WF Raleigh Networking Event. As I live in Florida and Ken now lives outside Savannah, GA it was practical for me to stop by and pick him up on the way to Raleigh.

He and Barb offered me a bed for the night and Ken and I planned to depart his home about 9:00 AM on Friday.

About 7:30 AM on Friday Ken started working. Just before 11:00 I forced him to get in the truck.

In that short period of time I think Ken accomplished more than I sometimes do in a week.

During the four days I was privileged to spend with Ken I witnessed decency in action.

Ken is a man without pretense, subterfuge or agenda.

Thanks, Mike, for posting this tribute. (Ken had nice things to say about you, too)

I have been off with the family for the last several hours and had no idea this thread had developed. Thanks for all the kind words from all of you.

Mike kept a close eye on me for several years and we still talk several times a week. It's always good for both of us to bounce our ideas off each other. Which is another lesson for all of us.

Try to discuss your chosen path with someone you trust. Listen to what they say and incorporate what you can use. Then work it the way that is comfortable for you. Because the only way you will continue to work on your project is if your comfortable with it.

I slept with Ken in NC (er, that came out wrong).

"Lovely"? You must have a different dictionary from mine.

OK, when he's not snoring like an old diesel engine with bad valves, he is a pretty quiet guy. Usually, because he's sitting in a chair in a corner snoozing.

However, as to Big Mike's OP. Do note:

He never gives up

I got to speak to Ken on Skype, how many years ago is it now. He was mentoring for Big Mike and niche mania.

Since then I have been in a mastermind group with Ken, and many others.

Ken works hard and is dedicated to his family and business.

Finally got to meet Ken at Raleigh, and yes, he is just like you would expect. A quiet spoken gentleman.

Thanks Mike for taking Ken under your wing, because if you hadn't who knows what type of business Ken would have had, and maybe we wouldn't have got to know him.

Mike you know this... Ken has been an outstanding inspiration to me for as long as I have known you. And you repeatedly told me "if Ken can do it, you can do it"...LOL Just never give up!

And Ken has been there a lot of the way to help me too (if only in exchange for lots of jokes)!

I am deeply grateful to and appreciative of both of you even if I don't have Kevin's luck in sleeping with Ken.

Thanks is a small word when it comes the kind of heart and support you two show.

Sid

Michael that video says more about perseverance and reaching a goal than any of us could write and convey in 1000, 500 word post.

And before anyone ask yes I'm old and grizzled and very much resemble the star. In fact he is better looking than me.

Ken, you old geezer! You've come a long way. I remember oh those many months ago when we talked on the phone and you bounced some ideas off of me. You were a gent then and you still are. Btw, I'm still waiting for my "geezerology" report.......hahaha

Hey Rod,

I like it when you post because and Old Geezer like me appreciates looking at the nice looking young lady in your avatar. Can't say much for the guy in the foreground though.

Oh wait you said I was a gent, so I guess I should be. NOT!!

Hmm! "Geezerology" you guys are putting me on the spot and putting the pressure on. I'm really going to have to dig my heels and see if I can come up with something that will be worthwhile for the folks that would read it.

I can always talk to Sid and get him to send me more jokes and I could include those in the report. What would you guys think of me making it a once a week "Geezerology" tip. I'm thinking we could all have some fun with that.

Mike,

Fortunately for me, I've been learning all about "subliminal shenanigans"

Without the super-hyper-uber-hush-hush-secret-underground-lessons I've since been exposed to, I would've missed this (forest? trees?):

He never gives up

It's only when you learn the truth that the truth becomes obvious.

Thanks,

Ken,

I just wanted to encourage you by saying well done! Clearly the respect noted above from other elite warriors say a lot about you and frankly your character.

Thanks for being an inspiration - we can always use that!

Will

PS - BigMike - appreciate you taking the time to share this encouraging story too. I wish we would see more of these type postings than some of the warrior-on-warrior condescending, ego-fueled, beat downs I've read lately. Nice.
