Default Sidewiki - If I have 1000's of pages, is there a way to find out which ones have sidewiki comments?

A very good question. I know you can find out if you have the toolbar, but that only works if you are willing to visit the page.

I haven't looked at it in detail, but I think the API for this can retrieve all the comments. You'd need it scripted for you...

I have a guy that built a script that does exactly what
you are looking for. I'd put it here but I'm not sure he want
it out to the public. PM me and I'll give you his addy.

I'll also email him and let him know.

Allen,

The short answer is: currently no. Here's the long answer...

When launching the new toolbar, Google also released a SideWiki API. Unfortunately in my and others tests, this API has been proven quite shaky and Google has acknowledged at least some of the problems it currently has.

Two of the biggest issues are:

#1. It only returns comments made on a single page, not site-wide. Also, there are a lot of ways to point to the same page - like yourdomain.com, yourdomain.com/, yourdomain.com/index.html all normally point to your home page - and the API treats them as different pages.

So not only you can't retrieve all the comments made on your site with a single call, but you can't even be sure that you got all the possible ways to call your pages either, if you get them one by one.

#2. The API is still in beta, and doesn't always return the comments for a given page even if it has comments. It's common to call the API and get say 5 comments, then half an hour later when calling the same API for the same page, get 3 comments or none.

Google has acknowledged this behavior and is working on an updated API.

Until then, I'm afraid there's no feasible way to be sure you got all the comments left on a site. You can get some, but there can be some more that you missed.

Sincerely,
Catalin Ionescu

Site owners such as you already see their revenue reduced to dust and their reputation tarnished because of SideWiki comments found on their sites. When have you checked yours last time? The harm is real.

You will have to get a script built for it .. I already have one built but I am not currently going to release it in the public. You can have a script built to auto check your pages and store the data for other uses (such as auto report)..

Allen, I don't know of a reliable way to read the comments, but I did post a link a couple of weeks ago to a free (not even an opt-in) script which would notify you if someone visited a page with SideWiki active.

Here's the link to the thread:

Sidewiki - Your Web Pages Monitor Themselves

I've been monitoring since then, and the usage hasn't been real high. I'm monitoring about 400 pages, and getting a dozen or so a day. And no comments left behind.

The funny thing is that the only pages being hit are the home pages on three sites.

One thing I've noticed, and maybe someone can explain it, is that when a page is hit, it gets three hits within about a minute from the same IP address. Never just one, never more than three, and always within a minute. Puzzling...
