How would you promote a new fitness site?

I've had a fitness domain for a couple of years.

Last week I had someone create a site where people can keep journals and charts of their calorie, exercise, and weight goals.

Members can encourage each other by posting replies to the journal entries.

I think once there are people actively writing and posting others will feel more comfortable joining. However, when you click profiles and there are only 1-2 it might prevent someone from signing up.

Here's my question.
What is the best way to get those first active members?

Anyone have any ideas they would be willing to share?

The first thing that site visitors see is not the Profiles list. What they see is the amount of content and the activity that are going on the site. I would suggest you to come up with a marketing strategy that involves content as well as finding out where is your target market hanging around.

Content marketing involves the use of content in various formats (text or articles, videos, audios, images) and the syndication of them around the web. A blog on your site with useful and interesting content will definitely attract search engine visitors in the long run.

What you can do apart from using content to attract users to your fitness site is to list the sites that they are already spending their time at. It can be various fitness/training forums around the Internet and groups on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter or Ning. The key here is to engage and interact with them. Keep in mind that spamming on such sites won't help.

Of course, at the end of the day, you need to integrate both of the strategies I have laid out above to get the best results. Visitors like useful content and if they are impressed, the chances of them becoming a user of your site will increase.

Hope my reply is able to help.

Wayne, great ideas! Right now the site is interactive, but there is not a lot of content. Adding a blog is probably a good thing to do.

I also like your idea of identifying my target market and interacting with them where they are.

    Thanks for helping me brainstorm!

Take a look for some forums in your niche and establish yourself as an expert.

Do regular posts with useful info, don't spam.

    Hope that helps

  • I do things backwards. I always find the market before I build a project. That way you don't waste time chasing after something that might not be there.

It's the whole blueprint philosophy that for some silly reason actually works. You created a plan then you execute it.

Over and over I see the same mistake. People build something then try to figure out how to make it work.

Buy some PLR fitness content and offer it to anyone who reaches a post count you specify.
