I was possibly looking at promoting material things rather than ebooks as they drive me up the wall

It depends to some degree what product category you are interested in promoting. But for physical products the top affiliate networks are CJ, Google Affiliate Network, Linkshare and Shareasale.

You should be able to find any products you are marketing on Amazon on one of those networks.
