Default Superman tried to scam me - "I made 426.23 online today" Twitter DMs

Pshaw. Either several DOZEN Twitter people made EXACTLY $426.23 online today and they all generously would like to show me how they did it...or a phisher got their into their accounts and sent out that DM using their Twitter account.

Remember, people, be extra cautious about clicking on links in Twitter DMs, even if they come from someone you know and trust. Because it seems as if it's incredibly easy to hack into people's accounts on Twitter.

Here's one of the DMs:

superman_: i made $426.23 online today with (link deleted) -

Seriously, folks, SUPERMAN is trying to scam me! I mean, if I can not even trust Superman, then I have just lost all faith. Oh, the humanity.

I can't even get into my DMs half the time anymore. Just tends to time out. I wish they had a mass delete feature. There are some I want to keep, but the thousands of spam DMs in there need to go.

There are countless variations on Twitter phishing scams - this is a new one to me - but another one is where someone sends you one saying something like "LMAO! Is this you in the video???" "I saw this picture of you!" - with a link in the DM - and you click on the link, and it takes you to what looks like a Twitter login home page, where you enter your name and password.

And bam, they got you - your account has now been compromised.

Direct Message. A private direct message between two twitter users. Only possible if both accounts follow each other - spam is not possible that way since one "subscribes" to the others status updates

I haven't been able to get into my DMs through Twitter for months now, but I get an email telling me when I get a DM, so that's how I see the spammy DMs. I can't remember the last time I got a real DM from a human.

I think some automated tools or plugins are being used to inject ads/promotions into peoples accounts and some people may be using them id a "blackhat" kind of way.

I once tried a Wordpress pluging to post to my Twitter account, then realized it was spamming their own messages through my account. So I deleted it and found a more reliable/trustworthy plugin.

So, yes, be careful clicking the links and using some automated tools.

VegasGreg I think you're right on, I installed probably the same plugin recently and noticed that too. It's a shame, you think you found something cool, but you never know.

Plus, did anyone else just get a huge increase in Twitter users lately, it seems like I'm getting 100+ a day all of a sudden.

Twitter is a very popular and convenient vector for malware, by the way. The links are cloaked so a lot of crackers use them to redirect people to their badware-inflicting pages.

Use Firefox with NoScript, folks.

Dana,

You brought it on yourself, I sorry to say.

Superman, via his alter ego, Clark Kent, was a reporter for "The Daily Planet".

In your previous life you were a reporter for the "Metropolis Ledger".

He has never forgotten or forgiven you scooping him on the "Hot Twittter Scam" story.
(Had he not gotten his tights in a wad he may have arrived on scene first.)

If you hadn't been so blasted efficient and tenacious you wouldn't be having these issues.

I'll leave you with these words made famous by the late Jim Croce.

"You don't tug on Superman's cape..."

Elmer

Well, as someone pointed out to me on Twitter, there have been a lot of newspaper layoffs recently. Clark Kent was one of them. Now, in desperation, Clark (or rather, one of his multiple personalities, Superman), apparently has started spamming people on Twitter.

Here's something most people do not know about Superman. He's a greedy man who only saves people so he can pickpocket them as he's flying away. I know it's hard to believe, but sooner or later you have to face reality.

Well, if you can't trust Superman, just trust Spiderman. LOL
just joking.

But, yes I get same message like you, Dana. It suck. We must be careful before opening something. But, one thing I feel pity. It is very easy hacking Twitter account. Their security need to be fixed.
