You can exchange e-mail lists, but I don't think that you can sell it.

If you think it's, it's probably is.

1) I know people who sold their lists. I know many people who swap ads. But I never heard about "exchanging email lists"

2) In the meantime, the fact that I didn't hear about "exchanging email lists" doesn't mean that it doesn't exist, but ... From subscriber's perspective selling a list and exchanging a list is absolutely the SAME thing. Their privacy is ZERO. [However, if it has been made crystal clear from the very beginning that subscribers' personal info can be shared with third parties but people still subscribed, then I don't see what's the problem in selling a list]

3) If you're referring to "rent a list" concept, that is a misleading marketing message. Actually no one rents any list to anyone [When an advertiser buys ad space in a newsletter, there is no rent of that list, the advertiser doesn't have access to subscribers' info]

I can't speak to legalities, but I can say this.

1. There is a company called leadfiresale from whom I have bought lists
2. There is a company call rent-a-list and while they don't actually sell you their list, they do allow you to mail your offer to them.
3. If someone opts into YOUR list, then no, they shouldn't be sold to another marketer.
4. I know with "GetResponse" you can have them (for a price) direct people to your list by checking a box on their site.

There are more companies and many ezine publishers that sell ad space in newsletters

Why do you think that? [Before answering, read point 2 from my previous post. I wouldn't buy such leads, but if there is market for them, why someone shouldn't sell them under the conditions mentioned in my previous post?]
