I think it is a great idea because you can combine ecommerce with a blog, articles, etc. I don't have a whole lot of experience with various plugins but I can recommend one idea. Go to iThemes.com, click on "More Themes" (on the home page), then scroll down to the eCommerce theme. It's a WordPress theme specifically built to do eCommerce. It looks great (very professional and elegant) and you can change to any one of six colors with one click. I own it and am impressed! ($79).

It's definitely possible to make a decent e-commerce site with WordPress. Be sure to check out the plugins that JonMills suggested. It works especially well if you use a theme that doesn't really look like a blog but more like an online retail site, depending on the products you're selling. This could really increase the perception of credibility for your site's visitors. It does take some extra work and customization but WordPress can be used as a content management system - it's more than just a blog platform.

If you are going to do a WP ecommerce site, I would HIGHLY look into the shopp plugin for wordpress. You do have to pay but it's worth it.

Roman Cart works well too as far as implementation goes. No personal "in use" experience of it though. Tony |

I've created a few sites with Drupal and an e-commerce module. I believe that when you mix a CMS and an e-commerce plugin there will be pros and cons. The pros are that you will have a site that is flexible giving you the ability to add a forum, blog, videos, etc.. The cons are that you may not have a shopping cart with all the bells and whistle of a professional shopping cart. An easy to use admin section of a shopping cart is very important, and right now I don't think some of these plugins can give you that. So what I like to do now is use an open source shopping cart sofware, like prestashop for example, then create a subdomain with a cms for anything else. |

I'm really happy with the "Markettheme" plugin for wordpress. Much much better than the wpecommerce plugin. In fact, if you google "Shirtyballs" you'll find one of my sites that uses Market theme. There are of course limitations for example it won't generate a database of your customers (this is why I am upgrading to a non-wordpress custom built website) but if you love Wordpress (I do) then market theme definitely does the job well. |

See the templates site in my sig. I kept it real simple and used e-Junkie as the shopping cart.
