A few months ago I decided to try an experiment. I posted a page on my blog offering free stumbles to anyone who placed a comment with the urls they wanted to be stumbled by me. (Mods, I don't have a link to this particular page in my signature or anything. I'm not trying to get traffic, but rather I'm just illustrating a creative way to get people to stumble your page.) There were no strings attached to receive the free stumbles. It was just a free gift for visiting my website. I also asked people to stumble the site if they felt this was useful but that wasn't required. Since that time 25 people have stumbled the page up and the page has received thousands of hits. It only takes a few stumbles to get traffic. One of the reasons I was able to get people to stumble up this particular page is that I first gave something away for free. And then I asked for a favor to stumble up the page. Not everyone was willing to do me a favor but quite a few were. This follows the rule of reciprocity which basically says that if you do something kind for someone else and then ask for something small in return, the person is likely to do it. This concept is covered in depth in the book by Robert Cialdini called: Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion. If you haven't read this book I highly recommend it! Has anyone else done something like this? Where you give away something of value for free and then ask for a favor? |

Hi. Interesting approach. I wonder, was the main purpose/content of the page centred on your stuble offer, or was it about something else, with that offer added to the end of it? |

It certainly doesn't hurt to offer something without strings. It helps build credibility and is a great Psych technique. Sounds like a winner, congrats. Shane |

Hi Nick, If I remember correctly there is a stumbleupon script that does this on autopilot.. I think I have a copy on one of my computers, the problem is which one and then what folder is it in ...lol It works I can tell you that.. Also if you get up with a few of the big boys on stumbleupon you do not have to do anything but ask them to stumble your url. One of my accounts I have a few big boys as friends and it never fails that I get 500 - 1,000 hits that will produce between 5 - 20 sales on a certain product... James |

How many sites did you have to stumble to get those 25?

The biggest advantage with StumbleUpon is that you don't need to know the big players to get a lot of traffic. One stumble alone can get 100 views and that could multiply if one or two in that 100 stumble the same post. Interesting approach to get stumbles. I have to say this though. The next time, when these same 25 people stumble your site, you will get only a fraction of traffic. StumbleUpon's algorithm is quite confusing. |

By having some of those big boys in on your side that traffic means sales becasue their followers trust their judgement because they do not just stumble anything and everything.. Big difference - I was slammed and called a liar on this forum because I produced $600 in sales from 600 views to a certain article using StumbleUpon... Fact is though they can slam me all they want, just goes to show who is the expert and who is not.. I have always said it and always will, take time to participate in the communities and they will pay you back 10 fold.. James

Of course big boys help. But what I was trying to say is, you can get a lot of visitors even if your blog is new and you don't know anyone. But on the long term, StumbleUpon or for that matter, any social voting site is all about community. If you can build a community, you can succeed. I have been using StumbleUpon for a long time now and I can say that the more you understand it, use it and make friends, the better your chances are for succeeding.

It worked for me. I was one of the ones that (gladly) stumbled Nick back.
