Should you put your articles on your blog?

I have heard that it is worth putting your articles on your blog. I have submitted quite a few to EzineArticles. I wonder if Google would penalise the blog for duplicate content. Also how would articles on the blog help with traffic if only a single version is indexed?

The only way you wouldn't get penailised for duplicate content is if you had the articles indexed on your blog first, or if you have a link on your articles at Ezine pointing back to your blog.

You are much better creating unique articles in your blog then having duplicates all over the web

This is untrue, and I know you didn't test it or else you wouldn't say it. The ONLY WAY to get the "Duplicate Content Penalty" is to have multiple duplicate pieces of content on the exact same domain. PERIOD.

Read that again, and remember it.

Just because Google will not show every copy of an identical article in a single SERP page for a particular keyword search DOES NOT mean than all those copies and back links are not pointing to your blog, passing page rank, and boosting the rankings of your own material.

The ONLY THING I have ever noticed that affects which copy of a particular piece of content Google ranks above the others is the EXACT SAME FACTORS that determine SEO for pages that AREN'T identical. SEO. PERIOD.

Which is why you write the article, and put it on your blog, and then syndicate it every possible place on the planet AS LONG as you backlink the copies back to your own hosted version.

This is the only strategy that makes any kind of sense.

Not to single you out there, guy. But you shouldn't willfully spread misinformation. So I have to assume you didn't know, so now you know.

This question has been asked and answered again and again - it's like a bad penny and just keeps showing up.

penalise the blog for duplicate content
No, because duplicate content has nothing to do with article marketing. With articles you are syndicating, not duplicating. I put the article on my site first and then submit.

So really - its pointless putting it on your blog as it has no effect on traffic generation.

i would rather bring traffic to my blog than my ezinearticles. I have posted to my blog first then EZA since day one and have had no problems to date.

I'm surprised you got away with it. I posted to a hub page first and then EzineArticles and they would not let it through unless I proved it was mine.

That has nothing to do with the issue you mentioned in your OP (namely "duplicate content urban legend").

Their concern was about copyright! You had to prove that you were the author. Easy to avoid when your EZA profile and your blog's author have the same name.

No, you should only put it on article directories. That way I can take it and use the content on my blog (since the article directory gives me permission). Then with minimal link building, my copy of the article will outrank the one in the article directory, and then we BOTH win.

Me and the article directory, that is. Not you. You lose. Unless you put your own content on your own website.

Seriously though, read that other link, and only listen to TheRichJerks and whoever is agreeing with what he says in that thread.

I just wanted to say that for me, this post of Colin's is perhaps the best reply in any of the last 5 threads on this subject. Sometimes the "thanks" button just isn't enough!

That's ever been the way of webmaster boards. You always get new people coming in and inevitably the same issues come up because, while they may be old hat to some, they are quite new to others. It never annoys me when I see it again because all I gotta do is remember when I didn't know about an issue and wanted to find out about it.

Makes perfect sense to me .. What I do not understand is why we have to have these same threads over and over and over ...

LOL - here we go again.

Listen, if you don't feel like reading that 10 page thread, why don't you just test it yourself?

It'll only take a few minutes. Just make sure you do it with more than one article. You need to do it with many before you can come close to a legitimate result.

p.s. Quit pickin' on Troy. He's just trying to learn. That was damn funny though, Colin.

My rule is that articles are for article directories, don't even try to place it in web2.0 sites. Blog posts is for your blog.

I've said it before and I guess I have to pipe in yet again. If you post an article on your blog and EZA Black Helicopters are immediately dispatched from google HQ and when found you are flogged within 2.3 inches of your life. Oh, and Larry Page will snack on your smaller house pets.

Wow, my first post back after a hiatus and this subject comes up again. I'm designing a "Duplicate Content Is A Myth" clothing line folks, look for it in my signature soon.
