I dunno, you'll have to look at your individual activities that you do every day to bring in the money. If it's something as simple as writing and posting articles, building wordpress sites and doing a bit of market research I'd say you'll be okay using one of the lower tiered notebooks. However if you do heavy video capturing and encoding to bring in your moolah, you might find that even one of the higher tiered netbooks doesn't fit your needs. |

I think of netbooks as cute but annoying. I used one for about 3 weeks earlier this year. The screen's too small and the keyboard's dinky. Not sure about their graphics ability - I remember I was able to run paint.net So yes - I'm sure you can do IM from a netbook if you want/need to. Great for travelling. |

Netbooks are awesome tools when you are in certain situations - on an airplane or in a coffee shop. But their small screen size makes them impractical for a lot of IM work, and their limited graphics and processing abilities make them unusable for video production. For writing code and articles they are sufficiently powerful, providing you can get used to the small keyboard. Bill |

You can do basic internet tasks, like writing articles, checking email, creating blogs, etc... but forget about multitasking. They won't process Photoshop + Internet + Video Processing too efficiently, they're mainly just for web browsing.

You can even do IM with your cell phone if you wish but don't injure yourself! I'd invest in a laptop with mix of features portability + performance, as I like to keep everything in one place and handy. Netbooks are cool but don't offer nearly enough performance. One of the most important features for me is the screen with high resolution, I just have to see as much data as possible at the same time - this is the area where netbooks fail miserably. I do 95% of my stuff on my laptop as it goes with me whenever I move around the house. I do have a powerful PC but I choose working on laptop for pure convenience and portability. This way saves tons of time. |

Get a Macbook. Costs double as much, but is double so good. Get external TFT, keyboard and mouse.

Hey Danny.. I often have a netbook in the car when I am out and about, they are great if you stop off for lunch somewhere and want to check on a few things.. I'm not sure that I would want to substitute my whole operating machines (2 PC's, with 3 monitors + 3 Laptops) for a netbook, but I am sure it would be possible... Peace Jay |

I looked at some netbooks earlier this year and decided that they would not have sufficient processing power and disk space for the software development, graphics and some IM programs I use. It's possible that they would work well for browsing and web-based applications though. There are 3 innovations I want to see in these small computers. The first, Windows 7, has been reached. The second is more RAM, processor power and hard drive space. Right now this is artificially limited by vendor agreements to protect the full sized laptop market, which sucks. The third is large SSD drives, 120GB+, starting at the current price point. |

I use a netbook for IM - I use twadder, friend adders, incansoft software, and magic article rewriter. I write articles, do some ftp'ing, check email, etc... I don't use it for design, do audio/video editing, or dictation. I read ebooks with it too. I have all my IM software on my netbook so I can run it along side my mac and not have constantly boot into windows for simple tasks. I also use it at work, in front of the TV, and on-the-go. I have the ACER Aspire (Products) with the larger screen and more ram. |

I only use a netbook, and it has as much power as my old PC. I have 160GB hard disk, 2 GB of ram, dual atom processor, which allows me to run all my programs which I use daily. The keyboard is 93% of a normal size keyboard, yes my typing dropped to around 110 word a minutes. If the keyboard is an issue then add an external one. Monitor is fine, but you could add an external one. I can run everything I need. Just upgrade to 2 GB of ram and you are well away. |

My second computer is an Acer Aspire One netbook running Windows XP. I carry it around town with me almost everyday. I use it for email and web browsing. I have Photoshop CS4 on it as well as Camtasia 6. I have no problem with Photoshop unless I might want to use lots of layers. For basic stuff it works fine. I have tried Camtasia and I find my mouse pointer a little choppy on screen but the video works well and I am able to render a short video in a few minutes. I sometimes create or update Wordpress themes for clients with it and have no problems whatsoever. Actually some of the themes on the my site below where created using Photoshop, PSPad and the netbook while I was on vacation. I love the size, the price and the portability. |

| I am using my Netbook Acer Aspire One with a 12inch(almost 12) screen and I can do everything I could do on my regular laptop. Its way lighter and battery has a 6-7 hour time depending on applications etc. They sare small and easy to carry around were as my regular laptop is not. For very long use would say get something with a bigger screen as much more easier on the old eyes. I have MS Office 2007 Pro, Visual Basic 6 Pro, Thunderbird, Ftp app and other apps in it so I would say they are great. Oh and cheap. |
