Scared To Market My Business!

Hey guys,

Thanks for checking out this post!

Eben Pagan and other great marketers say that you should be spending half of your day on generating business (finding JVs, affiliates, SEO, advertisements etc).

My business is now 4 months old and is doing well just driving traffic from adwords and SEO. Visitors LOVE the free info I give away and buyers are enjoying my products.

This past week I tracked my time and I spent ZERO time on Important higher level stuff like Marketing. I asked myself why I am not making any time for Marketing and a range of answers came up:

- My products aren't good enough yet (even though buyers love them now)
- MY autoresponder sequence isn't strong enough yet.
- I need to get the opt-in pages performing better!
- Affiliates and JVs won't convert!

It all comes down to the fact that I am scared for whatever reason to put my business out there. Accordingly I find reasons for why not to do it. I am being a perfectionist... but in reality the business will always be a work in progress.

Have any of you dealt with this?

Any suggestions for getting over this limiting mindset?

Thanks!

~Sean

When I get to the analysis paralysis stage and can't get over that hump, I say to myself a quote from Seven Sashen:

"I am willing to sell my product REGARDLESS of what I think of it!"

Sure, your stuff isn't perfect yet, but just keep producing and keep selling. Just keep delivering. Some of your stuff is going to be bad, some is going to be good. If you keep it up, you'll gain more and more experience and your products and e-mail follow-ups and whatnot will become better and better.

There was a really good post on here awhile ago about perfectionism called "The Perfect Marketing Strategy". You could find it with google.

The gist of it was....we spend so much time trying to get things perfect we either get stuck on one thing or don't take action.

I had a tendency to do that. Each article had to be just so etc. But really is spending hours of time trying to perfect little things worth it...not usually. Time can be better spent on other things.

Provide value but dont worry about it being perfect. What is perfect anyway?
In the long run it is the overall picture not each teeny weeny thing.

Keep in mind it does not have to be perfect, get it done and move on.

      Exactly.
Actually, procrastination is very often associated with perfectionism.
Robert B. Slaney`s (professor of psychology in Penn State's College of Education) analysis of adaptive and maladaptive perfectionists gives some valuable insight in particular topic.
      Quite interesting, indeed.

    Sean, Just Do It.

This is the best advice I can give to you.

Do it, promote it, sell it.

Even if it goes wrong, you're learning.

One line: IF you don't go, You'll never know.

    Damn true.

It can be tough to put yourself out there for the first time. You have a lot on the line (ego, reputation). What if they don't like it? What if I'm ignored? What if no one buys? Can I handle the criticisms as well as the praises?

Your business is an extension of you and you can't help but take everything personally (at least in the beginning). However, as mentioned, you just need to get it out there and get used to the fact that you're in the public eye. Maybe some won't like what you're selling, but I bet that the majority will.

For me, it never turns out as bad as I imagine it to be.

I have to agree with Fernando.

I know your site...you can't go wrong unless you decide to not take action.

For the mundane things that are redundant or to tedious for you...outsource.

In fact, your first step out of paralysis is to outsource.

      Get Her Done! Outsource it.

do not be scared, list the price hard and don't have regrets. If the customer knows that you are confident selling your product they will purchase, note.

I was the same way when i started, But let me tell you something that will help you Immensely:

You dont have to get it right, You just have to get it going.

Getting it going is the way to getting it done. You want to make sure that your putting as much time into getting it right as you can.

You'll never achieve perfection. My recommendation is to get yourself a timer, and set yourself a reasonable time limit to complete whatever task you are focusing on. I don't do it for everything, but I do it for some of my tasks and it helps.

The data will set you free. You may think your product is not good enough or it wont convert for JV's, but don't "think" but rather you should stick to the data. Calculate your conversion rate. Check your refund rate. If your conversion is low and your refund rate or complaint rate is high then you are correct your sales pitch and product needs work. but if your stats are average or above, then your product is good. Stick to the numbers and it will "ground" you and get your mind out of your right brain emotionally assessing your business and objectively left brain analyze your business. You will then build some confidence from the numbers and move forward appropriately.

One more thing, your business is only 4 months old. You may just need a little time to build some confidence in your business. Also, the reason they say to spend half your time on marketing is so your business grows. It is an assumption though. If you dont want your business to grow though either because you dont want to invest the time or dont need the extra money then doing growth activities is not right for you. But if you have loftier goals then you do need to work on growing your business.

Hey, don't be afraid, if you know people enjoy your products and they benefit from them then you have the obligation to promote it and to put it in front of the people that need it.

You have to do it because you are going to help these people so, go ahead and start promoting.

    Thanks'

Your post makes no sense. You say you've already put your business out there successfully, yet in the same post you say you're afraid to put your business out there. How can you be afraid to put it out there when you've already put it out there?

    Doesn't make sense.

    Hi Sean,

Some people are afraid of failure. Some people are afraid of success. It can be hard on the ego to put yourself out there.

Why don't you try to view it as a market test that you're doing just to gather information? Then it doesn't matter whether anyone likes your product or not. You're just gathering input for the FINAL perfect product. Maybe the perfectionist in you will like that better, lol.

I've been fearful of putting my products out there and I've been developing software for many years -- all my friends and family love it.... it's been easy to pitch to them... they have to see me every day

I recently changed my mindset to - put it out there and learn...

If it is good people will like it, if not I at least I know what doesn't work.

I think that changing your mindset is the key to moving forward -- understanding that your never going to please everyone is the key!
