Default Dragon NaturallySpeaking version 10

Hi Warriors,

Has anyone here experimented with the latest version of Dragon NaturallySpeaking?

I installed version 10 this morning, spent the mandatory five minutes training out of
the box, and have to say that I am totally blown away by the accuracy.

For anyone that is unfamiliar with this product, Dragon NaturallySpeaking is a voice recognition software. It allows you to speak into a microphone and the software
does your typing for you in a variety of software programs or even here in this
forum.

I completely dictated this post, never touch the keyboard, and it was 100%
accurate.

I just heard about version 10 yesterday and was wondering if it's a nice step up from 9.5. It sounds like it is, might have to upgrade even thought I just got 9.5 not to long ago.

Much love,
Dave.

I feel like such an outsider when it comes to this software. I purchased version 9 due to rave reviews and I've spent hours doing all the training but the accuracy is just not there. It's GOOD, but not so spectacular that it's easier than typing. I speak clearly and slowly and it often butchers words.

I feel like I have a massive speech impediment but I'm the only one who knows it.

Is 10 better?

I'm so happy with version 9 that I planned on just sticking with it. I've used version 6 through 8 and have never had to "train" them for hours. But if Scot trained it for 5 minutes and its that accurate maybe I'll upgrade to version 10.

Alot depends on your mic and sound card. I use an external sound pod (card) and a headset designed for dictation and it works pretty well. But I do run into problems once in awhile. There are some forums on voice recognition you can check out if you want to get an idea of what headsets work well.

Much love,
Dave.

I'm not sure about sound cards, but I'm sure that has a lot to do with it. But I have done some experimenting with two different microphones, and...

A cheap headset that I use, although fairly accurate, is nowhere near as good as my higher-priced microphone that sits on my desktop.

I got version 10 from eBay for $100. This was my first experience with it although I've known about it since the beginning. I have a generic headset mic and it works well. There are some words it misses but I realize I miss just as many when I type my thoughts.

If I get a long train of thought and remember my periods and commas, it is much faster than my typing. It will also remember brand names that you use in your articles once you type them in.

It's cool.

Does anyone here with an ACCENT, specifically foreign accent, use the software?

I'm Polish and am wondering how well this software would work for me. I have a Polish accent.

Peter,

I noticed in the latest version while installing that it did have some options as far as accents go.

I did not pay that close of attention, but I do not recall seeing polish as an option.

I would assume that while training, as long as you are consistent, the software should be able to distinguish your tendencies over time.

There is not a "huge" difference between version 9.5 and version 10.

You can probably find copies of version 9.5 on eBay for a song.

Thanks for the heads up Scot.

I've been real happy with 9.5 but may have to give 10 a try at some point.

I purchased version 10 but it wouldn't install on my Vista 64bit OS.

I am using Windows own VR built into Vista which is much better than I would have thought, and you just know it's going to get much better as Bill Gates has always proclaimed that VR will be the next major revolution in computing.

That's the Microsoft way. They just keep chipping away at it until it's the best, it's how they eventually dominated with Office apps.

I'm sure Dragon is better the the Windows Vista VR right now though. I've used 8 and it was pretty good.

David,

I had the same trouble, there is a known issue with DNS 10 and the Vista 64bit OS.

I didn't document what I did, but there are many posts about it if you Google it.

I was able to get mine working and I'm not that much of a techy

I am currently using Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9.5 the accuracy for me is about 99% most of the time.

I am actually anxious to upgrade to version 10 because I am excited about the speed increase.

If I had any complaints there would be two. Number one, the correct functions and commands are shoddy using Firefox. Number two, there is a big delay between when I speak in the words actually appear.

All in all I am extremely satisfied with the program. I sometimes make myself look like an idiot if I do not check what I have dictated, but it gives people a good laugh.

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to upgrading to version 10

This post was 100% dictated by the way.

Can you talk fast and still use the software? For example, could you record yourself doing a teleseminar and would it transcribe it for you accurately or do you have to talk pretty slow and monotone?

I've been pumping out 5 minute articles just by talking out loud. You can't beat that. And I talk pretty fast and pretty poorly.

It actually does a decent job of transcribing the actual words, but punctuation is a bit shoddy.

You end up with a huge run on sentence/paragraph that is hard as heck to work through.

I find it easier to just pay for the transcription.

Ahhh...punctuation. You need to pronounce punctuation. This will sound weird in a teleseminar.

For example, this sentence will be spoken like this...
For example comma this sentence will be spoken like this period period period

I don't have my DNS open on this PC, (Laptop is in for repairs, long story), but...

I believe that there is a setting where the new version will at least attempt punctuation for you.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong here.

Actually 9.5 and up have an auto punctuate function, works decently for commas and periods most of the time

Question for those of you who dictated your posts here with Dragon...Did you dictate in a word processor and then copy it over or were you able to dictate directly into the forum reply area?

I dictate right into the browser. I do however prefer dictating into dragonpad over word. It seems to be faster that way.

DNS 9.x doesn't handle foreign accent very well - you would be faster typing your post than to talk and correct the mistakes done by DNS. 9.x cannot handle the accent and I don't expect that 10.x is improved in that area. Or does someone has a download link for a trial version for the new version? All I found was a trial version for a older, Australian version of DNS.

I just upgraded my Dragon NaturallySpeaking to version 10. I must say, the difference is amazing. If you are still using version 9.5 I would highly recommend upgrading. You can upgrade very easily at Amazon for just $89

The accuracy difference is awesome and it is also much faster. I think I've corrected maybe one word since I started using this version. I would usually have to correct at least one word per post.

When I was writing articles I would need to make two or three corrections. I've now written three articles and made this post with only making one correction.

Now, I'm not going to reread this just to make sure, but if there is a mistake please forgive me. LOL :-)

Wow, it's up to 10 already?

I think the last time I played around with it I had 7...

I never had much of a use for it then, but I have a great idea that might mean I'll have to pick up this new release.

I am sure my copy is too old to get any kind of upgrade discount.

The more you use it the more accurate it gets.

For those like me that are lucky to get 40 words per minute typing, this tool pretty much evens the playing field.
