Default Windows 7 Question for all script and software developers.

These questions or rather the answers might interest anyone else who is in the market for a new PC or Laptop.

How many IM programs do you know of that won't work with the new Windows 7 OS ?

If you know of any that won't work in Windows 7- 64bit I would really like to hear about them.

I need to buy a replacement Laptop and after many hours of research and getting down to a short list I got stumped when it came down to almost all of the new laptops with Windows 7 having 64bit OS....

I know you can run an XP mode if you have Windows 7 Professional 32bit or 64 bit but the problem is not knowing how much of the IM software I've purchased over the years is going to work in either.

I'm sure I'm not the only one with these questions and I know there are a lot of software programers in the WF so please if anyone can share any light on this it may help others too.

Thanks,

Steve

The only software I am positive won't work on 64Bit (Vista or W7) would be those using the Microsoft Jet Engine (MS Access) for database applications. Jet/MDAC will not be supported on them according to Microsoft.

32Bit applications should run on 64Bit platforms without any hassles unless the software was really screwed up to begin with.

MS Access programs works fine in 64-bit since they are run in 32-bit mode. The problem with the missing 64-bit Jet driver comes when the applications are written for 64-bit mode only.

This far I have only seen that in server software. Most notably SSIS a tool accompanying MS SQL Server can not read MS Access or Excel files on 64-bit installations. A 32-bit version of SSIS can be run in a 64-bit OS though.

I almost sent you an email before posting these questions Mike as I have a lot of your software programs..... glad to hear yours will work on W7 64 bit )

What about Micro Niche Finder ? anyone know if that will work ok ?

Also would you guy's advise to go for the 64bit OS system or stick to a 32 bit W7 OS ?
From what I've read in the techy forums you can't have both so it's one or the other.

If you are using Win 7 Pro or Ultimate, you can use the free download Windows XP virtual PC, all application should work under there !

That's incorrect. Applications which use Microsoft Jet Engine still run on 64-bit systems.

Thanks for all your input guy's.

I had read about the Windows XP mode in Windows7 Pro and will probably purchase that "anytime upgrade" from NewEgg as they have it on offer for around $89. I took the plunge on a new Laptop running W7 Home Premium and the first program I'm having problems with is my FTP program.

I've used CoreFTP for years and had exported all my sites ready to import them on the Laptop but after installing CoreFTP le on this new 64bit system I've not been able to import my sites

The FTP program seems to be running ok ( at least it's opening ) I just can't import any sites.

I'm wondering if you can only import to CoreFTp from the same OS system that it was exported on..... I have another system running Windows XP and I can import sites into that coreftp program.....

If I knew for sure this problem would be fixed using the XP mode in W7 I would get the upgrade... anyone got any first hand knowledge on this?
