Confused About RSS

I am still completely confused as to how RSS feeds work, I have tried reading up on them online and I just can't wrap my mind around them.

Ill use an example here; Ezines. If I were to submit my ezine articles to the rss sites, how exactly does this work? Every article I write gets submitted inidividually? Or am I submitting my author profile that allows the rss engines when I have new content?

If so, does the same go for web 2.0 properties as well as my own domains? (IE I just have to submit each ONCE; or submit each time I publish new content).

Appreciate a point in the right direction.
