Let's say you get your site to number 1 in google by backlinks, blogging, articles etc.

In order to stay at number 1 or top 3, what do you have to do on an ongoing basis, or does it stay there on it's own because it is on the top and gets natural traffic.

I am trying to figure out which direction to go with my IM. I am leaning towards a niche website. I keep seeing people say after you do the work it can go on autopilot.

My husband and I own an awards business that is full time so I can't devote to much time to IM but see lots of potential.

I am just wondering what needs to be done on a long term ongoing basis to keep a site making money.

Depends on your niche. With a highly competitive niche, you have to be constantly updating your website content, keywords, backlinks, etc.

Personally, I have a few sites that I've never done any SEO other than picking a keyword rich domain. Some of those sites are still ranking on the first page of google and still getting decent traffic to this day.

I have seen some programs that says they automatically update your site with content. Will that be good enough to keep in the top 3??

It will help because you are constantly providing fresh content for the SEs, but I wouldn't make it the ONLY thing you do.

I know your dilemma. I just asked this question myself not long ago, but the answer was that you have to keep doing something. Getting backlinks on a regular basis might work best for you. Since your time is limited, try setting aside a few hours every week to get a certain number of backlinks. Those will be more permanent than a few ads and articles here and there.

Find article directories and related sites in your niche to offer your articles. Contact site owners and offer your articles for their auto responders and ezines. Once you get your articles in their auto responder systems, they keep rotating indefinitely. That's one of the top methods I would recommend to get more permanent backlinks in place.

The thing is, the ezine publishers get free content (which they're probably too busy to do themselves) in exchange for including your resource box with active backlink.
