Any Alternatives To Amazon S3 For FLV Video Hosting?

I want to Use the Amazon s3 service, but unfortunately
they are friggen retarded. (Venting).

I have created 3 accounts because the same thing keeps happening.

I sign up for the S3 Account and it never activates. I've done my research
and it happens to MANY people. Then my account no longer allows me
to login. It's just a pain in the ass. I've contacted their service but
their help is pretty much useless.

Now my question is is there any alternatives that will allow fast
FLV streaming?

  • I'd like to know the answer to this as well. My host doesn't allow flv streaming, and some videos you just don't want on YouTube.

Amazon s3 does not speed up your streaming.

You asked about alternatives to fast streaming...

There are only a couple things that effect how fast a video loads and plays and those are the bit rate the video was encoded at, the speed of the connection of your visitor, and the buffer time setting on the player you are using.

If your bit rate of your video is lower than the connection speed of your visitor and your buffer time is set to a second or two your video will play almost instantly.

And it does not matter one bit where you are hosting it.

What Amazon provides you is scalability... in other words you can have more connections and infinately available bandwidth...

Most people are better off going with an economy host like Aplus.net or Powweb.com both of which load balance and collocate.

But the truth is that just about any old hosting plan that allows as many concurrent connections as you need and gives you enough bandwidth and a big enough pipe to handle your demand will do.

Even some of the largest corporations and most successful internet marketers have no clue when it comes to video hosting...

Too many people think that Amazon somehow makes your video streaming faster... it does not. No hosting plan does. All hosting plans can do is make your video more available depending on the demand and the available resources.

But again there are very few things that effect how fast a video loads and plays and for the majority of publishers doing just a few thousand video views a month the hosting you choose, as long as you choose one that does not limit concurrent connections and provides you enough bandwidth and big enough pipe to meet your demand, will have no effect one way or another.

You don't need any special type of hosting either... an flv is just a file just like any other file pdf, tex, html etc.

When you use a standard progressive download "streaming" player which is how most players work these days then all you need is a standard file server.

      Thanks for the help.

I use economy hosting, and maybe Faster wasn't the term I should
      have used.

But I need storage space that allows lots of views at the same time
      and works just fine.

I don't want to use economy hosting any longer and Amazon S3
allows all the storage I need.

I've signed up for streamcast to see how that goes.

We have served hundreds of thousands of video views with the two economy hosts that I suggested in my post. Powweb offers unlimited bandwidth and storage on collocated load balanced servers for under $10 a month. Aplus.net offers 2tb of bandwidth and 150gigs of storage for under $10 a month.

You likely just picked the wrong host.

Also, I have never heard of the issues you are having with s3.

For me its as easy as uploading the file via the s3fox plugin and pasting the url to the file in my code for embedding the video.

Singing up to an s3 account is easy for anyone with an Amazon.com account.

Well I was using godaddy for hosting. I'll look into Powweb.

Search the amazon support forums and you'll find 100's of people with my
          exact problem.

            HEy Daniel,

I had a similar problem trying to sign up for S3 recently but with another error trying to pay with my Australian credit card... geez.

I looked around and found a great solution...

            I found this service called:

vzaar | video hosting, for your website

They're basically a S3 reseller but they have a cool player built in and a proper video account functionality, and easy embedding like youtube or Vimeo, and the videos stream nice and fast.

It's not as cheap as S3 by any means but it's not ridiculous.. and I've found it super easy to work with and great for what it does.

            Hope that helps mate.

            That there is your problem.

Godaddy does not state this clearly on their site but they actually limit you to only 50 concurrent connections and likely throttle a few other things.

If you hit 51 concurrent connections the make your site not available for the 51st visitor.

Godaddy is the worst hosting company that I know of.

You can try www.blip.tv to see if their speed works for you.

Once uploaded, you will have access to the .flv file.
You can also upload an image to be a thumbnail of your choosing.
