Double Opt-In subscribers reporting as spam... GRR

On a very low frequency list as well. Drives me completely nuts. Sends my spam index score through the roof.

Why can't people just unsubscribe from that which they subscribed and confirmed.

Sometimes people really suck.

Probably because they believe that hitting the unsubscribe link will make them marked as an active reader and they will get more and more emails. I used to believe that too once upon a time.

    It's unfortunate.

Unfortunately some people do sell the list after an unsubscribe. How long have the people been on your list? If they have not heard from you in a while, perhaps they forgot they subscribed. otherwise IDK why they would do that.

I am of the opinion that if you opt-in to a list, and then you report an email as spam from that list, it's malicious and intentional damage to a business.

Saying that you want emails from someone, confirming your intent, and then, instead of unsubscribing, but then reporting the email that YOU REQUESTED as spam is fraudulent and should bear liability. There's negative implications that can happen as a business with our service providers as a result of that action. We can sustain real damages.

That is annoying. What you should try and just letting them know that if they are unhappy getting the emails unsubscribe will not result in them receiving additional unwanted mail. Maybe let them know that just reporting it as spam hurts your business and you would appreciate they just unsubscribe.

But I do understand where you are coming from. If you do not want to be on my list then why did you DOUBLE opt in? But that is part of life. Hope that helps!

      Ya! It is annoying.

      They subscribe saying:
      "yes, I want your information"

      then they reconfirm saying:
"yes, I definitely want your information"

then you send them information and they say:
"what is this? I didn't ask for this information. Take me off this list"

A little stupid also. But it happens.

I can understand your frustration. But unfortunately, the way things are now, things are tilted toward in favor of the prospect, not the list owner.

    A few thoughts.

    1) I do not know your market, but your market may be not very internet savvy and not understand the difference in the unsubscribe and "spam" button. They may just actually use their "spam" button as a delete button.

    2) If people haven't heard from you in awhile, they probably forgot they ever subscribed to your list.

    3) When you got their email address was it for a freebie or did it mention they were also being put on a mailing list?

    4) Are the followups related to or reference what they signed up for to obtain in the first place?

    5) You can try putting s short paragraph at the very beginning of your email telling them why they are receiving this email and that they can unsubscribe by clicking a link at the bottom of this email.

I've suffered from this problem. My recommendations are as follows:

    1. Don't let your list go too low frequency - people will forget who you are.
    2. Whereas it is the case that it's not fair, you're never gonna track down who's doing it, and certainly you're not going to extract any money out of them through litigation, so you just need to chalk it up to experience.
    3. In your mails, highlight the option to unsubscribe by clicking on the link early on, and tell them that just clicking the spam button won't stop the emails coming - which is of course true.

All very good things to consider. I could probably hit the list a little more often, but then I'd have people complaining that I was too frequent.

Maybe I will just announce to everyone that some idiot peed in the pool and ruined the afternoon swim for everyone, and then announce that if you want to re-subscribe, I will be moving to a different service.

The list is small enough for that.

Is hitting my 2 times per week a good idea? Or should I do more?

I have decided to go single opt in, because many people are not confirming if it is set to double optin. Many people claim that the quality of the list is much better with double optin, but I have not seen any difference.

    Hi

thanks for this - i needed a vent of my own anger!!!

i get about 1 from every broadcast that does this on lists of approx 5k active subscribers. however i never get them from my followups which is strange.

what bugs me though is that about once a month i will get a message (reply to a broadcast) telling me to **** off you spammer and why havent i unsubscribed them when they didnt ask for the info when they are double opt-in.

I really dont understand why they need to behave like this when its with aweber and all they have to do is hit the unsubscribe at the bottom when they feel the need to do so.

    kind regards

There was a study done a couple of months back where the unsubscription link was placed at the TOP of the email, like, the FIRST line was an unsubscription link.

    Result....

SPAM complaints dropped to near zero AND unsubscription rates dropped as well!

I personally place my unsubscription link at the top and the bottom of the email, and having very good results.

Not sure if Aweber allows you to place unsubscription links, as they place them automatically at the bottom, but, if they do, give it a try.
