I'm in the middle filming a new video all about writing email. It is my belief that the overwhelming amount of email that goes out from marketers is absolutely horrible. I mean, really really bad.

It's downright unbelievable, sounds scammy, and looks like every other marketers emails.

I know I'm not the only one that feels this way.

Anyhow, the reason for this post was not to put down marketers but rather I'd like to ask you a question.

Who's email do you really look forward to reading?

And when I say look forward, I mean, when you see their name in your inbox you INSTANTLY click to see what they have to say. You want to read that email before anything else.

There's only 2 people's emails that I have ever felt that way about.

So I'm curious... "Who's" emails do you actually look forward to and would drop everything to read"?

Anybody?

Personally If you are looking for a good example, the Affilorama Email list by Mark Ling is great. even his promotional emails are full of good content that you can use.

Its the only marketers list I still get. I have unsubscribed all the others for the same reasons you have mentioned.

Honestly, I dont read any of them. Most go to the trash bin and that includes some of those names mentioned above. Dont get me wrong.......its nothing personal to these people like Paul Myers but I think when you figure out IM and what your Plan is and Map it out exactly what you want to do and what you need to do and identify the goals you aspire to reach and accomplish, then you dont need to waste time reading these emails.
It just turns into information overload. And becomes an INCREDIBLE distraction !! This is just from my experience and my own personal opinion.

And frankly, I would rather learn new stuff by coming hear with the best plethora of info. you will ever need in one convenient place !!

I usually open up your buddy Frank's emails. They are short, to the point, and usually lead to something of good value.

I like to read Matt Furey's email too as it's interesting to find how he can turn a current even into an email like he does quite often.

Those are about the only 2. There are a bunch of other marketers, many you are friends with and work closely with that I barely if ever open.

Those are too long...too gimmicky...contain made up stories about when the email was written...etc.

I can usually tell by the subject matter if they are selling something or have something that may be of genuine interest to me.

Actually, if I got an email from you, I would open it because I like your material, and what you teach and the fact that I don't get your emails so it would be a novelty that I would definitely read.

    OK,

To answer your question my answer is nobody. I never click and open right away Because Allen doesn't send me emails anymore. Now, on a positive note I have a "special folder" where I send emails I will read when I want to read them and into that special folder goes. Paul Myers, and Mr. Makepeace. A dozen or so other marketers mostly well known Warriors go into another special folder for reading after I finish the first special folder.

If Allen ever sends anything, (which he hasn't latly, at least to me) I open it right away, just because.

I too really dig Paul Myers emails. They are some of the best.

However, they don't give me that jolt that I "must" read right this second. (Sorry Paul, still love ya).

I reckon that's only because the emails tend to take a few minutes to read, and after 30 seconds I'm distracted by Sportscenter. (More pictures Paul)

When I think the best emails written by Warriors, Paul is the first one I think of that of though. They are damn good.

I have a feeling this thread is going to get a few notable people some more signups

Aside from observing copy for my email swipe file, I can't say anyone really sends me anything compelling. I pay attention to Kern and Walker to see what they're up to. Jeff is real abbreviated. Kern is Kern. You're part of the Kern/Earthy conversation style crowd, so at least it's somewhat interesting.

But we all know that it's just stuff to fill the interest space to keep the eyeballs and attention until the next JV promotion.... which is okay too because that's the name of the game.

I get a lot from Perry Marshall & Michel Fortin.

The most interesting guys I follow are actual copywriters. Neil Sagebiel's "Headlines from Floyd" comes to mind... http://headlinesfromfloyd.com

Yeah man Rich Jerk made me laugh out loud. I even enjoyed reading his sales page! I thought I was the odd one out for thinking that he's actually quite cool.

In those day I even actually bought his ebook, and guess what, it wasn't too shabby either.

Today I can't think of any marketer's email I actually enjoy reading, most I don't even read to be honest. Ahh man I hope I don't cause bad karma, my subs better keep reading mine! Grrrr.

      I like his style.

One of his emails was labeled as one of the best of Internet Marketing History, precisely talking about "JV Spamming"...

Thinking about it.. There are a few I will always open.

Frank Kern... just because he has me in his mesmerizing death grip

Jason Moffatt... I like his style (and he is friends with Frank)

Robert Plank... I have no clue why I read his emails, but I literally read everyone he sends, which is usually everyday.

Russell Brunson... That dude knows his crap. Very systematized, and I like his use of different landing pages

The are a few that I never open unless there is a big push for something and I want to see how they are marketing it.

The cool thing about this thread is...

    1. There will be a obvious pattern of who's emails are really good.

    and...

    2. A couple Warriors will likely be thinking to themselves "does this email suck?" the next time they are about to hit that broadcast button.

Here's how you know you are doing email right... You're subscribers will email you asking if you would email them more often.

I wonder how many people get that request from their subscribers?

Just the other day I got an email from someone on my list saying they were worried about me because they haven't heard from me in a long time.

Then again, I get a couple of emails saying "Don't send me anymore of this annoying crap". Of course they don't know to (or just don't for some reason) click the unsubscribe link.

I don't read anyone's 100%. I actually unsubscribed from a bunch. Even if they have good content, it distracts me from getting work done.

    With that being said....

Perry Marshall's - He has his own folder. I read about 95% of his emails.

Dan Kennedy - Used to read all of his. Now I don't get very many, at all. If I do (usually from Bill anyway), I don't usually read them.

Craig Garber - Also has his own folder. I read about 99% of his emails. They all have solid content. And they all have a soft pitch at the end. But I'd say it's more a call to action than a pitch. I think that way because he provides such usefull content that I don't care if he mentions his products.

Kern - Used to read them all. Now I usually delete them.

Clayton Makepeace - Read about 50% of his.

These days, the less email the better. Such a time vampire.

Seriously, Jason, I agree with the view in your OP. IMO, the standard of marketing emails has deteriorated over the last year or so and I must have unsubscribed from dozens of lists in recent months. Far too many staid and formulaic cookie-cutter mailings.

So, regarding "traditional" newsletter emails - for me, it's really only Paul Myers left standing.

Nowadays, I mostly just subscribe to blog feeds and they're keeping my inbox full enough. It's an area where creativity is still rife and I'm constantly discovering new gems just in the marketing sphere alone.

Notice something interesting? People who provide value tend to get read more often. People who simply try to sell you something get deleted. Even the ones that used to be good can end up in the scrap heap if they abuse the privilege of sending email.

I used to read everything I got from Robert Ringer and ETR but as their format drifted, they ended up getting into the To Be Read Later. I still like Kern's videos. Usually more for the way he presents than what he is presenting.

I do scan headlines and give credence to those that have consistently provided good information. I browse them when looking for inspiration.

Several of the people mentioned provide excellent content with nearly every email. That's why they get read more often.

      Jason,

This response will be different than most because it doesn't have anything to do with IM. Instead it has to do with making money and keeping it... and, being aware of what's REALLY happening in the world economy. I very much look forward to and read twice daily email from...

The Crux is a highly regarded financial news aggregator and is in my opinion the only place you need to get the world's best financial news. I say that because the major media only report what they want you to hear with very few exceptions.

I realize most folks here could give a hoot about financial markets, but maybe time to start. Not getting on a soapbox--just a heads-up. Take care.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Eben Pagan. I know he's an excellent marketer however he really does practice what he preaches and gives away $100+ worth of content in his "Training Videos."

Other exceptional resources are Clayton Makepeace, Gary Halbert, and Gary Benecivenga. All of whom have free newsletter content that combined would be worth over $1,000+ in information.

Personally I think the people who say "I don't read any." OR "I only read so-and-so's newsletter" are really missing out on a great deal of valuable information. If you need convincing of that fact, Google the above names and start reading.

And then there's one other person I don't even consider a marketer in the internet marketing sense of the word. But a lot of the email marketers out there could stand to take note of how this guy operates. He has supplied me with so much information that I look for his emails almost every time I start my day, because the info is often an eye-opener, and most of the time supplied without a sales message of any kind. His marketing is the OPPOSITE of the sell, sell, sell emails I get that dog my inbox and that I many times find myself unsubscribing from. And here's the thing: if you want his assistance with something, it's $1,000 per 30 minute phone call to gain access.

And that's Simon Black over at SovereignMan.com. If ever there was an anti-sell email newsletter, this appears to be it.

Jason, before I tell you the name how about you tell me your 2 names?

Edit: Ok, looks like you already did.

For me, it's this young guy who I think is only 18 or 19, Kris Manieri or something like that. I just signed up for his list (I think from warrior forum somehow) and I absolutely love the information he has given me, for free.

I can't decide on just two. My short list would be:

      Andy Williams
      Tony Shepherd
      Phil Wiley
      Harvey Segal

Why? Because they have personality. They write as much about their lives as they do anything else. They stopped being mere messages in my inbox and started being friends.

Who wouldn't open emails from friends first?

I used to like Bencivenga's and Halberts.

    These days not much.

Perhaps Eben's and Mike Hills. Also Paul Myers from time to time if I get time.

All of the other g u r u 's are usually trying to sell stuff all the time. Usually unreviewed products from other g u r u 's.

What about starting a thread for the most irritating emails received?

    Probably get deleted though.

Emails I open automatically because of "who" they are from?

PayPal *haha* Kidding, but I do love those ones.

Frank Kern -this guy is funny even when he's pitching. Frank's emails are the only ones that really seem like you're getting an email from a lifelong friend. Maybe he really is a sorcerer and really does have EVERYONE under the Alchemist's Spell...but his emails are so good (in they don't come across as marketing schmarmy) you'd never figure it out to break free from the curse.

Paul Myers - now that I'm on his list, I tend to read his emails just because they're from him, and since I know him from this forum - I'm afraid I'll miss something "basic, but must-know" if I don't read what he writes.

Jason Moffatt - used to open these FIRST, ahead of everybody because this dude was just COOLNESS in a box. Totally real, and totally unafraid to say and do exactly what he thought. Then something changed for a while. Don't know what went down, but maybe he'll be back to "normal" (which is completely opposite of everyone elses "normal") soon? <wink>

and lately, I open emails from Travis Sago, John Reese, Perry Marshall, and John Fancher.

I began opting out from every list possible a few weeks ago - I still do it daily. It takes too much of my time, even if I don't read the emails.

      I stayed on these lists:

Jason Moffatt (just reading your new pdf - it's awesome)
      Kern
Amish Shah - even though I don't do CPA or PPC
      Chris Rempel
      Chad Kimball
      John Reese
      Maria Gudelis
Travis Sago - even though I don't promote MOMU anymore
Kate Anderson - she has terrific PLR and website packages
      Steven Walk
      The Rhodes brothers
      Daniel Molano
      Imran Naseem
      Thomas Gajdjis

      and a few other Warriors.

      I would get 100 - 300 emails a day, it was a nightmare.

I read about everything that's important to know here anyway.

Over the years I have weened myself off of most lists, but stay on a few because I actually read them, and they are:

        Paul M
        Frank Kern
        Travis Sago

Paul's is jam packed with info, although a little dry, but I enjoy reading them...

Frank is Frank, and I don't think there is enough humor in IM so he is able to present his info in a way that appeals to me...

And Travis just has a certain style that appeals to me, I am just unable to put my finger on why, but I know each email has something in it I can learn from.

Like many others, I have two email addresses, and one is for list signups, service signs up, etc etc.

I read the emails from alot of marketers, and I think it's kind of my job as an IM'r to read and see what the industry is up too.

I think the best emails to read (for me) are from product creators who are developers themselves, they always have the best stuff. Sid hale, Bill Ortell, Josh bartlett, dave guidon, etc etc.

That's just because I really like developers over straight up marketers who outsource
product creation then spend all there time trying to tell me why I gotta buy there solution.

Developers usually come up with better ideas, and they don't need to spend to much
time telling me why I need, because its usually pretty obvious if the tool is useful for me
    or not.

Ok, here it is, the so-famous email from Rich Jerk:

    "Hey Loser,

I don't know about you, but I'm so sick of all these product launches lately. My inbox is inundated with subjects like this:

"Hey, I'm launching a piece of crap Thursday. Get on the early notification list now to get a sh*tty bonus that costs me nothing. I promise to send you tons of other crappy offers in the future too."

    or

"Suck Ass Wannabe Profits launches today. Buy this useless sh*t now before the price goes up. I hope I make enough money to fix my 88' Corolla."

    or

"Announcing the launch of my brand spankin' new platinum Box of Junk - guaranteed to make you $5,000 in 5 minutes....(*disclaimer: not everyone will make $5k*)"

I'm here to tell you right now that there are about 100 people "in the loop" on every product launch you see. It's an incestuous group that "uses" one another. People have repeatedly tried to suck me into the group. So I checked it out, and here's the process for each launch:

Whoever creates a product (which was most likely outsourced to a guy in Romania) contacts a couple of Joint Venture brokers who take a small percentage of the launch proceeds, in exchange for getting major affiliates on board.

These affiliates don't know what's in the package, they don't know what the product does, and they don't care. It could be the biggest pile of steaming dog sh*t, and they'll still promote the hell out of it. If you have a list of thousands of people who are desperate to make money any way they can, its pump and dump time.

I've sat in on meetings with some of these guys and
you know what they discuss? How to fu*k every one of you out of as much money as possible. Even some of the guys you think are the "good ones". I've got news for you, They Ain't. They actually laugh at how stupid you are. Chasing this "secret" that doesn't even exist.

And do you know why you get the EXACT same email from every launch affiliate? It's because one person wrote it and handed it out to all of the affiliates, to make it that much easier for them to promote. Most affiliates DON'T EVEN READ the email. They just send it, with their affiliate link already pre-populated into it.

And finally, the sales letter is usually written just a FEW HOURS before the product launches. Why? Because nobody knows what the fu*k is going on. These things are run by a group of idiots who are in different geographic locations and don't know how to communicate with one another. And major mistakes are always being made - like the site being down at launch time, a broken shopping cart, whatever.

    It's a joke.

When you hear somebody made $1 million, $5 million, or even $10 million on a product launch, do you think it's NET profit? No way. After paying affiliates, fulfillment centers, outsourced labor, JV brokers, etc., and THEN paying refunds which are typically 20% or so right off the bat, the NET isn't all its cracked up to be. And if it's a month to month thing, forget about it. People drop off like flies every month.

So don't get caught up in thinking these guys are getting rich...

    THEY'RE NOT...

I've even been guilty of getting sucked into a couple of these launches myself. And the only reason I did was because I BELIEVED in the products. Whether they live up to to the hype remains to be seen. I'm as interested to find out as you are. I really hope they OVER-DELIVER.

Regardless, I just wanted you to know what REALLY happens with all this choreographed bullsh*t. Because when you're on my list, you are entitled to THE TRUTH. At least the truth as I see it after taking my meds.

After sending this email, I'll probably be dropped from the list of the 100 affiliates who are "in the know". But fu*k it..."

Jason, it's a pretty short list that varies depending on what's going on.

I won't say 'instantly', but Paul Myers' emails don't get old before they get read - usually the same day.

Perry Marshall gets a FastPass, too. Glenn Livingston is on the list.

There are a few more that get a quick scan. Eben Pagan when he's in "moving the free line" mode, for one.

Quite a few get dumped at the subject line - "Go, go, go" is one, as is "only X {hours | copies | bonuses} left" on something I know I'm not buying for another...

There are a lot of other folks that I keep tabs on via RSS.

Most days I run into a stretch where I'm just mentally tired and need a break. That's when I catch up to a lot of the lists that don't make the first cut.

I won't go over my list because they have been listed here. Instead without naming names they are some that automatically get deleted.
If it contains free, a dollar trial in the subject line; more often than not it is something I can do without.
Another pet peeve is 5 or 6 emails from the same marketer with the same subject line and which automatically get deleted. How that happens I'm not sure.
More often than not if I can't hit reply to ask a question or comment I'm less likely to open. It is just worth it to open up a help desk ticket. I don't mind confirming I'm a real person not a bot.
By now I can smell a pitch coming and will usually just delete most of those.
I recieve too many emails to pay attention to all of them and while I do unsubcribe a lot of times its faster to just delete, though not as permanent.

The one I hate the most is the Travis bum marketer guy (hates a strong word, do not hate the man, just his emails annoy me), for the way he writes his emails. He uses all these silly hip words and a-typical formatting. Must be his copywriting strategy but for me, his emails, they are so stupid. But it must be working for him. I do not hate him per se, as I can see he is just being corny on purpose especially if I ever watch his videos, and he seems like an ok guy, but his whole emailing campaign rubs me the wrong way. Just write like a normal person!

I unsubscribed from just about every list because most of them offered ZERO value to my life, but there are a select few that I still belong to:

    Perry Marshall (Incredible value)
    Glenn Livingston
Frank Kern (can't resist his charm)
    Daniel Levis (great teleseminars)
    Michel Fortin (great copywriting info)
    Dave Lakhani (usually great content)
Geoff Shaw (a warrior who consistently gives great content with virtually no hard pitches)
Don & Jeremy (they rarely mail, but anything from them is amazing)

Hmm, more than I thought. Still, all of the above bring value to my life so I'm happy to read their emails. The rest....no time for them.

I don't always get down to reading all their mails, but I do make an effort when time permits...

      Shaun O'Reilly
      Brian McElroy
      Paul Hancox
      GoGetta

I know it's not your regular list... but these guys offer genuine value and rarely sell, unlike the majority unfortunately.

I'm one of those guys that finds it difficult to unsubscribe from lists, so my mailbox gets cluttered with junk that I delete as soon as I set eyes on the name of the sender.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Lee McIntyre yet. He provides incredible training videos for free and his promotions are very successful because of the way he interacts with his list.

I'll also add Paul Myers and Brian McElroy too.

Phil Gosling from the UK. He hardly ever sends emails and when he does he never has anything to sell. I the 3 years I've been on his list he's recomended one $97 ebook and had one course for sale ages ago that I almost booked myself on, the only thing was £12,000 (I think) was a bit too steep for me.

I'm itching for him to pitch me stuff and he never does!

Frank Kern ( nearly removed 6 months ago due crappy affiliate offers
but has given me a lot of value and I have purchased some of his work )

Eben Pagan - 50% of the emails he has sent will never be deleted.

Howie Schwartz ( just removed him due to repetitive offers )

StomperNet - When they have a good one, it is REALLY good. (Eg. Forumula 5 Free Lessons )

and Travis Sago, because his info is good, and he makes me laugh.

Used to be subscribed to many, including some very big names, but most don't write much good info any more, just buy this, buy this, buy this. And they all promote the same thing at exactly the same time. Then next week, we're all on to some other new gotta have this thing. Delete.

I first look at the "From" and next the "Subject". While I would not normally even open your post with "Who?" as the topic title, it sufficiently 'pissed' me that I actually did.

Most marketing headlines, including your post, fail to offer a personally beneficial reason to not potentially 'waste' some time by opening it.

I especially immediately hit delete when I know it's from someone selling high-dollar hype and BS and I won't mention any names here unless you 'twist' my arm.

I really wish that all of the gurus that I used to subscribe to didn't get so greedy. I used to subscribe to a bunch of them until they were sending ONLY affiliate offers, and of course everyone was sending the same offers. I get it... that's how they make the big bucks, but really, it got so annoying and I lost trust in them because sometimes I actually opened the emails and bought into those offers and mostly they were just junk... completely regurgitated crapola!

I'm quite annoyed with Mike Filsaime because he sends out a ridiculous amount affiliate offers each day and no content, then I get LaunchTree duplicate email every time!. Unsubscribed.

I REALLY like Frank Kern, Eben Pagen & Stompernet because they are the only ones that don't overdo it and still provide quality content and quality offers. Anyone else in the same realm of my favs listed here, let me know!

I'm probably a little biased since we are good friends
and partners, but my vote goes to Travis Sago.

He was the first list I was on and I've always admired
his down to earth writing style.

He's also one of the few people that I see actually providing
a lesson and good content in their promotional emails... you
usually learn a lot whether you buy what he's promoting or not.

Lately Andy Jenkin's emails have been really good too.

    Anybody?

  • I read pretty much everyones emails actually... I like to keep my finger on the pulse of the industry so to speak. Who's promoting who etc.

However I will agree that the email marketing practiced by most is downright horrible. I *never* use swipe copy, and you will never see me recommend anything that I haven't fully tested and can really add some valuable points about. On that note, it's always nice when people send just fun emails and that's something i like to do from time to time too (like the infamous thailand video haha).

    .

I stopped reading IM emails for a long time, I come to a point where I know what works for me and what doesn't and I don't need someone to tell me what to do, or what to buy, I know I will always need to learn something new but emails is not my source of learning.

and the reason is that I've been really disappointed of many well known internet marketers not necessarily for their own products but for the crappy products they promote, it makes me don't want to hear from them again!

    Perry Marshall's emails are awesome.

Jon Leger might not be the most entertaining dude but his content and offers are solid.

I find Reese & Kern entertaining, and even though I don't really get into their stuff that much it's fun to stay in the loop, see what they're doing, etc. No reason to unsubscribe.

There's also a LOT of "mid-size" marketers out there with incredible content, many of whom are mentioned here.

They will eventually replace some of the current offer-slammers who are at the "top", simply because they can actually retain their audience as a result of building a personality and value.

And of course - not to beat a dead horse - but Myers definitely has the process mastered. (And that's because it's NOT a "process").
