How Do You Make Linkbait Work?

Everyone knows linkbaiting works and I want to use it on my blog, but once you break a great news story or whatever your link bait is, how do you get people to actually link to you?

Do you ask them to?

When you are breaking a news story, all the press and big blogs find you in Google search when they want to add additional info when reporting that news.

If you are writing an informational linkbait like "101 Reasons Why Your Blog Is Read Only By You And Your Dog", you have to use social media to its best to get links. You can also ask all your friends to Retweet. Link to other top bloggers and send them a mail saying they have been mentioned. If your content is very good, you'll be linked back by those top bloggers.

You can also do this. You can ask your friends who have power accounts in social media sites to vote for you. Or you can hire a super user to submit your post in sites like Digg.
