A common forum question is "how do I create a pdf from a word document?". And then a refinement might be ".... which preserves hyperlinks?" Well, I've got a further refinement: ".... and which preserves the screen tips that you can define in Word?" I want to include ugly, GA tracking URLs in the pdf, but don't want them showing up when readers hover over the link. Word allows you define: - the URL - the text on the page, AND - a screen tip and they can all be different. But I've not been able to find any pdf-creator software that preserves the screen tip. Perhaps that's not even possible with pdfs. Does anyone have an insight into this? Many thanks. Alex |

Go to the main forum page and look at the link underneath the "Making Money Online" forum. I don't know for sure whether it preserves hyperlinks, but I think it's likely, and either way it's a low-risk check.

The screen tip in Word is a feature unique to Microsoft Word...not Adobe Acrobat. I don't think you will find a solution for the screentip. As for hyperlinks, Acrobat Pro lets me edit the hyperlinks and text. Just google the instructions if you have Acrobat Pro. As for the tracking, maybe there's a workaround. Instead of loading GA into the PDF, why don't you try remotely loading an image (uniquely created for this purpose) from a URL and track it's pageloads. That should give you sufficient stats on distribution. I don't think embedding the GA javascript into a PDF will work very well. I'd personally delete it in a heartbeat due to security concerns. |

You can produce a PDF with hyperlinks from a Word document for free by using Openoffice.org Writer. I don't think I've ever seen a PDF with something like "tooltips".

I have stopped using Word since quite some time. Open Office does it all better. It has no problem exporting pdf's with links. Try it out as it is a free application |

Thanks to all who replied. I use the openoffice word processor for creating pdf - that wasn't the issue. The issue was how to preseve the screen tips that MS Word allows you to create. BlueSquares told what I needed to know, but really didn't want to hear! (Although I suspected that was the case.) Thanks. What I meant about GA tracking URLs was the long URLs you can use to tell GA what the Source etc. was for the click when the URL isn't on a webpage. I hadn't even considered putting GA tracking code in a pdf - didn't know you could! Looks like I need to re-think how/whether to do such tracking. Alex |
