Default Youtube 1080P

1080p VIDEOS are coming soon... But am I missing something here? Broadcast TV uses 1080i/720p because of bandwidth issues. What is Youtube going to be doing to keep file sizes down on 1080P?

Huffington Post did a write up today Andy Plesser: YouTube's New HD Format Gets Good Reception on Madison Avenue (video)

But still no mention of Bandwidth. Most consumer Camcorders including hi-end models from Canon still only do 1080i. I know there are cheaper models like Sanyos that do 1080p, but they lack in other areas like lens quality and image stabilization?

What do you think?

Do you think there is a competitive advantage to posting in 1080P? Google is claiming they will feature 1080P... so maybe a traffic boost to early adopters?

Seems like something they can use to burn money even faster than before, on a project they've yet to profit from. Unless they want people to pay for such a service.

Actually for most (except for entertainment companies) it would be quite the opposite.

There is really very little purpose for it unless you need high resolution to get your message across.

You will run into three problems:

1. The speed of the internet connection of the visitor (US markets are catching up but are still slow in many areas).

2. The load time and the impatience of the visitor.

3. The actual resolution available to the visitor on their display.

You will get more views at YT standard or HQ than at YT HD.

Most people don't publish videos that the viewing experience would make any difference at all in 1080p

1080 would be more for their movie plugs I would think. I see those all over youtube now.

After doing some more reading today it appears this is really just to appease corporate advertisers. HD Video takes a ton of resources to edit on my local machine so I've been putting off doing anything HD so far. I was just surprised that Google was jumping on this... maybe 720p but 1080p really seems like overkill to me. Josh your point is well taken and that's my belief as well... I was just trying to see how this benefits Google. Apparently it's just to make some advertisers happy.

I upload some content to YouTube for clients at 720p.

1080p does well to please corporates, ad agencies, production companies, higher education institutions and those who want to show the full 1080p spectrum, with most of them having massive bandwidth pipes to view internal content on within their own network.

Keep in mind ALOT of professionals prefer 1080p over 108i for visual look, motion and display reasons (including me).

On a side note, I shoot what is just going to the web with 720p then optimize from there, but if it's going to be displayed for offline use, I'll shoot at 1080p.

Best,
Scott
