Default AWeber Optin Forms are BLOCKED in Firefox with Adblock Plus!

I routinely view the front page of EZA to check out the competition and their tactics. Today, I found out that a guy with 9083 articles called Sean R. Mize is pushing people to his Squeeze page. Thing is, I can't see his optin form.

Why? Because it's blocked by Firefox 3 with the Adblock Plus plugin. I'm not sure if this also impacts FF2. I'm not sure what the percentage of FF3 users are with Adblock Plus, but it gets 317,699 weekly downloads and is Firefox's #2 Most Popular plugin. So it must be considerable. And as we all know...do everything necessary to boost that conversion rate!

FYI, if you're hosting Aweber forms, you may want to change the code a bit.

And Sean...take a break, man! 9,083 means it's time for a beer!

Here's what I do and don't see...

Did Adblock Plus come standard with FF3, or is it an add-on you added later?

Must be a addin.

Most normal internet users don't use advanced plugins like that anyway.

Lots of my readers were complaining about no opt-in form. Turns out it was ad block plus.

Just switch to the html form anyway -- you have more control over a few things, like the text of the submit button can be changed.

Jeff,

Not arguing with your suggestion to use HTML, but you can change the submit button text when setting up the parameters for the javascript form, too.

Did you miss the part about 317,699 weekly downloads? That's 1.2 million downloads a month.

That's a lot of people using the plugin. Don't blame those numbers on the geeks.

For the other non-believers. Here's the list of most popular Firefox Plugins.

Adblock Plus is #2

Wow, I did not know about that! I use the html form for the sidebars of my sites so I can shorten the width of the fields, but I always use the java script for squeeze pages. Thanks for posting this, I had no idea they were being blocked for some people.

There's several bugs in FF3, I've reported some about table alignments, etc, which has just now been patched and should be released soon... there's an update coming at end of month, beginning of next, at least that's what the developers said.

Understood. But it's not a bug. Aweber is deliberately blocked in Adblock Plus.

Go here:
http://easylist.adblockplus.org/adblock_rick752.txt

And search for Aweber. On line 629, it says:
Code:
/forms.aweber.

Hi BlueSquares,

I just went to his articles and was able to optin without any problems. I am using ff3 at this time. Hard to say what is causing a problem for you.

As has been posted several times in this thread already, the problem is NOT Firefox, it's the AdBlock Plus plugin.

There are a few reasons why some would want to use a Javascript form versus a HTML one (if you use a HTML form you will not have any pop-up functionality, and you will not have display stats for the form).

For those that want to use Javascript, one option would be to include a line of text right above the form that says "If you can't see the form below click here", and then link that to a page with the HTML version of the form.

It may be a sign of things to come, who knows?

So, looking for a solution makes sense.

If you are concerned about a form not showing you could always add a note that says, "If you cannot view the form, please [enter alternative here]"

It's not a great solution, but may prevent the loss of a good % of opt-ins.

Javascript is not the problem. FF3 has no problem displaying Javascript.

Aweber is not the problem. FF3 has no problem displaying aweber forms embedded with javascript.

do html forms work with adblock? I use html so I can set up my own forms with better call-to-action type graphics for the button, etc.

Josh - are you using the adblock plugin?

I know I'm not the first person to say this, but I don't use the JS. I always create an HTML form.. It only takes 2 minutes and you can customize it to fit your page perfectly..

Nah, I like surfing an internet that is not broken. Ads don't bug me and ad block programs are a joke that mess up your internet experience as they cannot tell the difference between functions meant to improve experience on a web page and actual ads.

Anyone who surfs the web with javascript disabled and wonders why sites do not work for them needs to have their heads checked.

I've changed the title to reflect the plugin.

If anyone wants me to check out their Aweber optin form with FF3/Adblock, just send over your URL via PM.

Since the Eolas patent issue Javascript is now the standard for embedding flash content.

So is the problem flash?

Google uses javascript to embed adsense

So the problem is adsense?

If you block javascript you block other desirable content.

The problem is using a javascript blocker not aweber using javascript.

Quote:
Because someone has scared them into thinking those things are dangerous.
And fear is driven by ignorance.

Javascript is an important language in web programming and without it people will find a lot of the web does not work for them. If they use a javascript blocker they only have themselves to blame.

What I would recommend is that you use the <noscript> tag and put some very large html words to appear on your page to immediately command the attention of people who have javascript disabled.

Tell them why they should enable it.
