I am looking for the best adobe illustrator like program for creating graphics for web design and general art. I know that I need illustrator, but I can't afford it right now. What's the best substitute until I can afford it?

You could try GIMP. It's free and Open Source.

Doesn't illustrator give a 30 day free trial?

If you have a specific project to bang out you might have enough time to do it in.

Most of what I am seeing here and on my own searches are image editor programs. I am looking for a program like illustrator for creating vector graphics and such. Any idea where I can find this kind of program, or are these image editors the best I can hope for for free?

Is Google sketchup any good? I don't use vector graphics, so could be well wide of the mark!

      Hey Joel,

Your request is consfusing...You're asking about Illustrator, which is a vector (draw) program, but your thread title asks for a rastor (bitmap/paint) program. Paint programs are bitmap, and include Gimp, Photoshop, Paint, etc.

Are you sure you need a vector program? Are you trying to edit existing vectors?

I'm not aware of any free/low cost vector programs. Here's a search from download.com that may give you some help:
vector graphics downloads - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

If you can't find anything, your best bet may be to buy and older version of Illustrator at ebay...

PS...Vector graphics are very hard to master and are generally used in print and not online.
