Should I Blog for Passion or Blog for profit?

Getting mixed signals.

Now I, like 99% of future successful internet marketers have read numerous ebooks and courses on blogging.

I will say that the majority of them are focused on finding products that are selling, or an audience that is hungry, or a niche that seems open or untapped. Not sure how many of the ladder there actually are but I'm sure there must be some.

Anyway, in what I've read I won't say that it's a 50/50 split on building a blog/business around your passion or finding where the money is and going for it. It's more like 70/30 for profit. At least in the materials that I have read.

Dan Kennedy in one of his books, I forget which one says something like. "You're an idiot if you think that you will get wealthy following your passion." I guess that would depend on what your passion actually is.

On the flip side. Steve Pavlina, that super healthy guy basically says. Blog it and they will come. That's what he did and he's become very successful as a result.

I like the idea of building a blog around something that I'm passionate about, but don't know if it could be monetized. I suppose if my blog had 50k pages of fresh content about my passion it would make me money regardless of what the topic is. But wait a minute, that means I have to do a ton of work over time.

Just wanted to get the feedback of some more experienced and successful warriors about this.

Thanks,

Stiz

If you are passionate about money then it all works out in the end.

I think honestly its a subtle mix of both. Of course if there is something you are passionate about, for instance, weightlifting, then there are ample opportunities to make money blogging about it.

Sounds like a bumper sticker..."I blog for sex."

    Hey, Stiz:

In my opinion, the bottom line is, different things work for different people: Dan K's system works for him; Steve P's system works for him. Which one is best for YOU?

That's what marketing is all about: testing to find out what methods are out there and which ones work best for YOU.

I say, if you want to be happy and you want to enjoy what you do and develop a sense of fulfillment and achievement, you need to follow your passion and build on that.

It depends on whether you are looking to build a steady online income, what your passion is and whether there is a market for it.

It will be much easier for you to build a site just because you love the topic but if there is no money to be made you are just doing it for the sake of having a project that you love. Any money made here is "passion profit".

Why not do both? Find several niches in markets where there is money to be made. When you need a break from working on those you can go back to your "passion profit" site.

Who knows you might be one of the lucky ones that find out that blogging about their passion can make them a substantial income.

Good luck in whatever you choose to do!

I've tried both methods. End result: Try sending passion in an envelope to your electric company. Thats all I'm saying.

Agreed, passions don't always belie a profitable niche. I have friends whose passion is freeloading... hmm... wait, they could write an eBook on freeloading survival, a guide of sorts and then sell that, so... nm idk

Whatever you feel is right. But personally speaking, making money is my passion so I get the best of both worlds. This doesn't really feel like work to me, because I've always been passionate about marketing and business.

Niches you don't care about - for profit.

Niches you're passionate about - for passion.

If you're lucky you'll find the niche you're passionate about could be monetized and you'll find it a lot easier to make it big than any other niche because building it up isn't work, it's fun.

I would say that you only must be passionate about writing original quality posts
in order to make your blog popular. Good writers can make money in any niche.
You determine a profitable niche, you do your comprehensive research and then
you write killer posts hitting all the main problems in that niche.

I would work on sites to make the money to free up your time. Then use your free time to pursue passions whether it's blogging or anything else in life.

The truth is that the success of your blog will not depend whether you are writing about your passion or writing about money..

Your blog will make money whatever you write about..

And you know what the secret is?

Long Tail KEYWORDS with a decent monthly search and low competition

So whatever you write about, whether its about your passion or about making money, if you can find long tail keywords that you can dominate, then you can always be successful.

So I guess you should stop thinking of whether to follow your passion or writing for money and instead start firing up Google's keyword tool and start checking out the competition. Also use the wonder wheel to give you an idea of related keywords you can use in your blog posts and additional articles.

Oh and as a bonus..Every time you create a blog post with the proper long tail keywords, create another one or two articles with the same idea but written a bit differently and build a squidoo lens, a hubpage, a wordpress blog, a blogger blog, and about 5 to 10 more web 2.0 properties and link to the page on your blog post.

Don't forget to bookmark your blog post and all the other web 2.0 properties. This will help you get that top spot.

    All the best,

    Omar

I would have to say that it is a 50/50 split. Do both, or you will give up. Who knows maybe your passion will lead to an opportunity you didn't see before. Spending time working on both will help you stay focused on the task at hand. If you split your time by doing tasks you hate (and we all have them) then you could reward yourself by doing the thing you love.
