Fort Knox of Blog Comments

I comment the hell out of blogs... but each comment is written to match the content on the page. Sure my intentions are purely selfish in order to boost some project I'm working on.

But I am always amazed by the PR0 blogs or PR1 blogs that are ... well how do I put this nicely, crap. You know what I mean. And they have spam filters set up so aggressively that you couldn't comment them if you wanted to.

I fail to see the logic in making your comments so hard to comment that nothing legitimate can get through. When I look at the top blogs across the NET I see one common theme and that is user participation. Sure nobody wants the Viagra, Porn, whatever comments.

But how does locking down your blog gain you readership?

And how does it matter if an anchor text is Bob Smith or Seattle Hotels? They are still both outgoing links?

I like comments to match the theme of my sites. So if someone comes to my site on Seattle Hotels and leaves a comment I would prefer it say "Orlando Vacations" than "Bob Smith"... at least then it makes sense.

Just my opinions. I believe without user participation a blog is doomed.

Why would you want links from your blogs comments anyway? If you accidentally link to cr@p sites this will hurt your blog.

Often filters in blogs are just activated but not configured...why bother. Who really has the time to check some comments, most of which are spam anyway?

I am guilty of "locking my blog down" as you put it.

The reason being I don't want idiots spamming the hell out of the posts I have spent ages writing with generic, run of the mill comments which are obviously only there for a link, when I am having a great time interacting with my "proper" readers.

On my blog, I'd much rather someone linked with their proper name, rather than some keyword phrase - how can I get to know someone who calls themselves "Make Money Online", is that what is on their birth certificate?

Should I bother trying to form a response to their (effectively anonymous) comment or is it just easier for me to hit the "spam" button in Wordpress and get on with responding to the readers who I care about and who care about me in return?

User participation, as you put it, does not have to mean hundreds of spammy comments with just one thing in mind - backlinks.

And how many people want to participate with users who call themselves "Discount Shoes" or "Seattle Hotels"?

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

  • As the owner of a PR0 blog which is quite possibly the greatest blog in the known universe, I am very pleased to hear that aggressive spam filtering frustrates spammers like you.

I set comments to be moderated. It doesn't get approved unless I say so. I check the url every time. Most of the time I don't have to go visit the url cuz the spamers are so obvious.

I really don't care if they use thier name or a keyword phrase as long as the comment is decent and on topic. I've even allowed hyperlinks in the body of the comment because it was on topic and decent.

These aren't blogs that have anything to do with IM...get beyond the IM industry and it's a whole different world out there with a different mentality.
