Alexa rank of 14 million but #2 in Google?

My website alternates between #2 and #17 in Google for a specific keyword. The Alexa rank is 14 million!!

I'm confused as to how it can be at #2 with an Alexa rank of 14 million. The sites surrounding mine on the first page have very low Alexa numbers. I've heard mixed opinions on whether to even bother with Alexa. I feel that I'm doing something right with the #2 but something not so right with the 14 million. Should I pay attention to this number?

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Sometimes if you have a very specific keyword/category that people search, you're going to show up #1-2 on google. Alexa is grouping you in with EVERY SINGLE website however.

There are tons of websites out there and even if you're really popular you're going to still be ranked pretty low.

That being said, it's still a bit curious.

Indeed, I thought this a bit curious as well. My instinct was to not go crazy paying attention to Alexa. I have Firefox SEO so I get all this info under each result and can't help but look.

      Thanks.

To my knowledge, Alexa only tracks visitors who have their toolbar installed. However, it may have changed in the last year or so. I've never bothered with caring about Alexa.

Alexa.com can not track your traffic ... Only you can do that with your host and the server logs. There is no program that can track your traffic properly unless they have actual access to the server logs.

It's the same thing with compete and other stats programs. Not even google itself can track every visitor to your site. If you have cpanel then then best way to track your traffic is with AWSTATS as it is tied into your server logs and will give you exactly what your traffic is.

What I find funny is many will waste their time trying to track competition and use these stats programs thinking this is the traffic they have ...lol

I don't think it matters in the least. What matters is your rank in google and other search engines.

Alexa is just overall traffic to your site by people that have their toolbar.
It does give a quick estimate at how well your traffic is doing but by no means gives all traffic data.
Some people purchase traffic to get this score to drop. You can also get it under 1,000,000 just by putting the toolbar on your browser and visiting your site several times per day.

So unless you are trying to sell your site I would give Alexa no concern. (a lot of newbs look at the alexa score when purchasing a site)

Alexa is not sending you any traffic, Google is, so I would be more interested in what my status on Google is and not worry too much about what Alexa says.

So basically: Why the hell does Alexa exist, other than for curiosity purposes?

        To waste internet space ....

Actually it is a way for a company to gain investors and get those investors to throw in a bunch of money so they can use that money on other projects. Course that is only part of the reason they exist.

I think you don't have to bother about Alexa rank though, rank #2 with your keyword and 14million in Alexa Ranking has no direct relationship, as long as you write great and useful content, Google loves it and voola!

  • This just in: NOBODY IN THE REAL WORLD USES ALEXA! Ask the next 10 people you meet on the street what search engines they use and how many do you think would say Alexa?

I didn't realize Alexa is a search engine. I thought it was just a ranking service. Just goes to show how true your comment is or how ignorant I am !

Alexa can not track other places either ...lol

On one of my sites they proclaim that 30% of my traffic is from a high fraud rate country but I have the entire country blocked from my site. This is how much they know..

Alexa would not know what traffic was if it bite them in the rear...

Yes...keyword is longtail. It gets 1600 "phrase" searches per month. I strategically chose a keyword under 2400...less competitive. Thing is, I'm not really getting any traffic from it even though it bounces back and forth from #2 and #17 in Google. This is part of the reason I posted my concern regarding Alexa. I started to think that Alexa actually mattered.

Sometimes I think that it only shows up #2 on my computer and nowhere else..haha!!

      Thanks

Alexa is 100% irrelevant. like, below 300,000 or something it might have a little bit of statistical significane, above that, forget it. I have sites that have like 2,000,000 alexa and 300 visitors per day or so...

Other's have like 40 visitors per day and rank 500,000 in alexa. It can't show you, really.

The logs, like somebody mentioned is what counts, at least I think so... Or, not even that... Count your business in "leads per day" and calculate the value for each lead over a period of 6 months... Then you know more about your business and future projections.

Traffic is irrelevant without conversion, yet I sell a course on how to do it, lol!

I have two sites that have an alexa rank of around 63,000 which looks fairly impressive. Believe me though, they don't get anywhere near the traffic some would expect them to receive. The results are skewed and calculated in a certain way.

I'd forget about Alexa and just focus on your traffic numbers bringing in targeted quality traffic.
