Whats the one thing that is stopping you making a living in IM? (Noobs only)

Just thought I would throw the question out there...

as a noob myself it would be interesting to know what others (who aren't making a living in IM) to put forward their thoughts on the subject.

I'd appreciate input from people who are new to this like me and not for another person who has "made it in IM" to preach to the lesser beings. No offence but you guys regularly post here telling us how we ge it wrong...

Cheers...

:-)

The realization that IM isn't easy nor is it for everyone.

There are tons of people saying "I'll take you though it step by step" or "So easy my 14 year old son could do it."

But those statements and all others like it are bull****.

You can't just whip up a blog, apply some SEO, write some articles and expect IM to make your car payments. You'll be lucky if it pays for your coffee once a week.

To do IM successfully you need to think like a marketer. Those who are truly successful put their heart into what they do. They enjoy the creative process. At the end of the day, if you're "all about the Benjamens" you'll find yourself to be miserable, broke, and looking for a new career.

Making a living online is a HUGE deal for me.

        Life changing
        It's unbelievably important

I have made three sales in 2 months so I would say not knowing where I'm going wrong is what's stopping me.

Also, not knowing if I'm wasting my time by changing my landing page (for example) and waiting for a month just to realize my first landing page was better.

So I guess it's results orientated. If I didn't know better then I may have quit after (a total of) 4 months of work for three sales!

    JoshuaG sums it up perfectley,

The reason why IM is so big is that there is money to be made in every single Niche out there from grass cutting to building a replica of the Eiffel Tower.

You have to make sure that you put everything into waht you do and make sure that you over deliver in everything to a standard where you would be more than happy if you used the service or bought the product for yourself.

I tend to want to know about ALL the available methods for making money online. I don't want to miss out on "THE BEST" way so I educate myself on all that I can. I tend to feel that what 'I' am doing is NOT what those who are making the real money are doing. But it is! It just takes time. This thinking is a product of not having any real success yet.

We all know more than we think (thanks in large part to this forum). If we stick with it and have confidence we will succeed.

    Great post!

What's stopping me is my freakin day job that I'm trying to escape from! All my best hours are spent there and so I can't devote the time I wish I could to IM. So frustrated because if I could spend quality time - not just 5 minutes here and 10 minutes there - I would be able to get going with what I want to do more than anything else in the world!

Right there with you on this point. I work 12 hours a day minimum in my day job and it is extremely difficult to get the strength to put even 2 hours a day for my IM. Too bad im in a unfit financial situation right now to quit. I have to feed the family...or do I....haha.

Every cent I've made from IM, I've put into outsourcing so to get more done and I have seen improvements but they are pretty slow. I seem to be getting more and more each month though...so eventually Im hoping it pans out.

Time is what is stopping me from making a living from IM.

You can do some real damage from 9pm to 12 a.m. If you're dead set on IM, you'll pull those hours.

When I started my home inspection company I would market my services and perform my services by day, then spend about 6 hours at the end of the day learning how to market and do my services better.

Easily put in about 12 hours a day 6 days a week. And even at that pace, it still took about 3 months to get busy.

      IM is no different.

My biggest struggle (I'm ashamed to say) is sticking with one method. I tend to get a little ADD all over the place and jump from SEO, to PPC, to social sites. I've decided to stick with article marketing until I have 100 articles live.

Thanks for the question. Ok, I have many blogs up, mostly affiliate based, I put up most of the content and I have a tiny bit of success then; boom. It stops and I can't seem to replicate it again so I start on something else.

Of course with teh article marketing I had such a late start I kinda got max-slapped so I'm starting over with, what was, a decent bit of adsense change comeing in.

And ARRRGGHHH, If I hear one more time "it's in the list" I'm gonna poke someone's eye out. I have 2300+ on my list and they ain't bought JACK.

To those who say their day job:

I still have my day job but I manage to make a pretty good amount of money with IM on the "side". You just need to find something that provides a high return on your limited time investment.

I make enough money with IM to quit my job except that I make damn good money at my job and considering the amount of work I really put into it, it makes more financial sense for me to keep it

To summarize: work smarter, not harder. Find an hour a day and do it every single day. Those hours add up.

    Hey mate,

    It's really THIS SIMPLE....

Do something that makes you money, this week, preferably today.

Gain some experience and some confidence.

My one buddy sold Mimosa tree's on Ebay.

I started by selling VHS videos that I produced. Here is my second product, converted to DVD - http://www.handshakeinduction.com

That product was first sold on EBAY. Years later, I bought the dot com, and now it's #1 on Google for the target keywords.

But it all started with me doing something simple, so I SAW money coming in.

Let me know if that makes sense. Better yet, let me know how well it works for you.

(I know someone will whine, that I am teaching BUSINESS - not IM - But you need a BUSINESS MIND - to succeed in internet marketing.)

    And most of all,

    Have Fun!

    Mr. Brightside,
I apologize for crashing your thread since I'm not a newbie. I can understanding your frustrations with the experienced people seemingly talking down to newbies, but if you are looking to be successful wouldn't it be better to learn from those who are now where you want to be? People who can help you avoid the mistakes they've made.

Most newbies all make the same mistakes and don't even realize what they are doing wrong sometimes for years. This keeps them in a perpetual cycle of buying and learning without ever finding any real success.

I know some of the experienced people here can be rough on newbies, but if I may offer one piece of advice I'd say to find success, learn from those who already are where you want to be.

Hi Mr. Brightside and everyone else. This is my first post !

I think there's a few very concrete reasons for this phenomena.

It reminds me of the way math was being taught in high school.

Students were taught equations. numbers. not situations and problems.

So, for example, if a problem about two runners running towards each other at certain speeds bla bla bla was given. E-V-E-R-Y-O-N-E would take all the data that was given, the speed, the distance, etc.. and start putting it into equations to find the solution. Instead of thinking about the 2 runners as a story, as in what's really going on. It's this desire for people to have a blueprint. They want to, when given a problem, just immediately understand how to solve it, which equations to use etc and then just put everything together and make it work. But if anything that requires people to use these equations in a more creative way, they would always get stuck, because thinking this way means being a robot. People will do anything to avoid using their mind. In internet marketing, people want to know exactly what to write, how to design, what to say etc... So they just do it and it works. It's just like trying to put the data, the speed of the runners and the distance into equations trying to figure out the time. People were wired to do this by the schools, society, etc.. and they think that it's actually easier this way , because it doesn't require their mind to do anything. But really, you can't solve anything with this unless you've solved something very similar before. But if we look at the two runners, and through our natural understanding of time, speed and distance we just think about what's going on in this 'situation' , we can figure out pretty much anything. Because we have this natural understanding that is naturally flawless. Like seeing a room. When you just look at a room, you gain an understanding of it, you immediately become aware, on some level, of the size of it and all that comes with it. You following me ? . When you have a problem with two runners and you think about it as a story, as in what's going on, what data you have and what they want you to figure out, you start using your mind, naturally, and you start to understand it. Because your mind can do it. You can't stuff things into equations. You can figure them out. That's why I used to study 4-5 for tests that most people would study months in advance. Because they wanted to do every problem in the book and make sure that they remember how to solve each type of problems (like robots), while I just briefly learned the topics and understood what they are in nature and how they operate. I took a few exercises and went to the exam. Because I didn't care which problem they would give me. I understood the concept, I understood the system.

In internet marketing, they can be compared to the kind of people that go about learning and learning, reading and reading all the courses and all the techniques and more about the same techniques to make sure that they know exactly what every situation is and how it all works while what I did can be compared to learning the basics of PPC, affiliate marketing, blogging (just as an example) and relying on your natural understanding of human beings, which is much much more clever, creative, and potentially powerful than any 'equation'.

think about it, what is a great marketer ? Does he know all the equations ? no..

He understands the system, he understands how it all works, how people will respond to what he's saying so if he wants a 1000$ now, he can easily figure out what he needs to do to make the system throw money his way. Essentially, that's all you can ever do.

So, one problem is that people are wired to learning how to deal with very specific situations instead of focusing on the system and the environment in which they're operating. This causes people to feel impotent because, really, they have no idea what they're doing and they're just following the instructions like robots.

another problem is that once we want to put everything into equations, the slightest bit of imperfection could potentially paralyze us. Sometimes, it even causes us to regress.

And we logically see (I see..) a lot of successful websites that don't have the most amazing design.. or maybe their video looks bad.. but it still works..

It's again about this wanting to stuff everything into a structured equation instead of looking at the two runners ! instead of looking at what's actually going on, At the people that are sitting on the other side looking at your web pages. About what they are feeling and thinking. Do they think you're just a guy that wants to make money off of them ? Do they think you really care about them ? Do they think you're cool ? Do they want to meet you for a cup of coffee ? How do they look at you as a person ? Again, it's just about looking at what's actually going on..

Think about this, you have seen web pages that made you feel like the other person genuinely wants to help you and you have seen others that made you feel like the person is a very talented woman, and you may have seen others that made you feel like you're being sold, like the other person doesn't even care one bit about who you are. And people really can just use their equations, the things they think they should do, trying to obey as many laws as possible, without stopping to think for one moment about how it looks. Reality is, all those people that I've mentioned, may or may not actually have the agenda that they made you think they have. Think about it like a kid. What is that other person thinking?.. what do I want him to do ? What will he feel if he'll want to do it ? How can I cause him to feel this way ? When people think in this simple ways, in terms of what's going on, whether it's figuring out the distance between the two runners or figuring out how to make a 1000$ tomorrow doesn't make a difference. 1000$ is about making 1000$ come your way. You can get a 1000$ to pay you a 1 for a teleseminar. or you could just make one 2000$ sale while being allowed to spend 1000$ for advertising.

    It comes down to this:

How do you learn to play a guitar ? you watch others play, then you take it and you play, and it doesn't sound too good, but you listen to how it sounds and how it changes relatively to how you're playing and you begin to develop this natural understanding of how playing on a guitar works. But people in internet marketing. They watch others playing the guitar (making money..) and they watch other people and other techniques. It's like wanting to see all the techniques for playing the guitar before you ever touch the guitar. It's crazy! And then, when they think about doing something, usually, because they learned so much, they started to think that it's a lot harder , they started to over complicate as usual instead of looking at it simply, and then they approach the guitar but they just suppose that they will create foul noises if they'll play it.. so, why bother ? ..

    So , three problems.

    1. Once people start learning about these 'equations' (techniques, models) , they get terribly afraid every time they sense a flaw in it somewhere. When they feel that any part of it isn't perfect, it's bad, design, headlines, content, etc.. Moreover, the general way of things in the industry today causes people to think that they just need more and more techniques. People were tricked into believing that they need something to succeed and they just keep getting courses instead of doing something. They get paralyzed. This, in effect, is exactly like not playing the guitar because there are more techniques you haven't learned about .. Need I remind you, you haven't played for your first time. yet...

The solution to this problem depends. If you like equations and really don't want to think about anything for yourself, go pick 1 and follow it.

In any case, the key is to realize that you don't know how to play the guitar and that the only way to play good songs (make good money..) is to learn to play the guitar.
You have to start playing first ! and then , by playing and listening to what comes out, we learn what works better when and we become better and better.

    1. People are trained to over complicate things and look at it from a mechanical point of view. This usually leads to feelings of incapability and sometimes pure stupidity in their work.

The solution is to just think always about what's going on. About the people that are involved, the emotions, the feelings, the offers. etc.. As we talked about. Looking at the runners and the road on which they're running. Not at a bunch of numbers.

So the first problem has to do with making you play the guitar.
And the second one is about making you a good player.

The first problem, by the way, deals with your perception. The industry today makes people feel like it's very hard to make money, cause there's just things about it everywhere. And whether you want to acknowledge it or not, we see thousands of these courses and we feel 0.0001 amount of results, so we begin to assume that it doesn't work. That it won't work. That there's no point in playing the guitar right now. It's more important to learn other techniques.. You need to change your perception that it's hard and that it won't work. How ? Be creative. Imagine that you had a very scary experience in the elevator some time ago and now every time you're there, you're scared. how would you change that perception ? have fun in the elevator, imagine yourself on a warm cloud in the elevator. Who knows.. But change your perception and your actions will vary I-M-M-E-D-I-A-T-E-L-Y I swear to god, it never fails. The slightest shift in perception is immediately effecting all the choices you make. Try it and see.

    Just play the guitar!

To answer your original question in one sentence:

The thing that's stopping people from making money on the internet is the perception that they wouldn't make any/enough money. If you sincerely thought you would have 2m$ in a week for doing this very specific thing, you would do it. If your perception indicates that you'll fail, you'll like to avoid trying..

wow.. this came out quite a long post . I hope it's not too much of a mess.

My "day" job hinders me a lot... I work third shift at a hotel in NY. 11pm to 7 am five days a week... I sleep from 9-5 while the rest of the world is working so I lose out on some opportunities but I also have realized a major opportunity that was staring me in the face... I have no managers watching me through my entire shift! I basically manage the hotel all night (though I don't get paid like a real manager) and without anyone to keep me from doing most things I take the opportunity to research and work all night after my normal work is done. This gives me a real leg up on people who have to wait to get home to do anything.

This is a major help to me since outside of work I have a lot of family responsibilities that make it harder for me to accomplish anything personally, even on my days off.

My advice to other noobs out there is to use what advantages life offers you to your benifit. Make the most of what you have and waste nothing. We all have the ability to become great at anything if we take what we have and make it work for us. Learn everything you can before you start into any project. Then after you launch keep learning. Knowlege is power.

It comes down to not wasting time on things that are not important. You can figure those things out with your own experience. Also, you need to work hard, especially at first. The relaxing can come later when you have the money to outsource on methods you know to be successful. You need a plan of action, that is a must. You should write down your immediate goals for each day the night before, and stick to them in order of importance. Do not be afraid of hard work. Do not be afraid to fail. Fear of failure and lack of confidence are major killers. You have just got to be bold and brave and find something that works. Work hard at something until it works or until it's obvious it doesn't work. Writing 10 articles and not making any sells and than telling yourself article marketing doesn't work is not going to cut it. You have got to work harder than that. Take a cheap coaching program, find a mentor, something, anything. Keep working at it and find the ways to work smarter, not harder with no results. Find the ways to work smarter and than work hard at them. I know some of this may be cliche but it's true.

Patience is what is keeping me from my ultimate goal. Time is a very important factor in any of the things that most of us are trying to accomplish. We need to understand that there should be no expectation of instant-gratification.

Just because you opened to door and pointed to the sign doesn't mean that customers are going to pop up from out of nowhere. Sometimes you have to wait for someone to walk down the street. (I hope that analogy isn't too skewed)

Lack of focus.FOCUS...The second one has been the belief that it is so easy and then I try and nothing works for me and I want to blame the Gurus who made me believe it is easy.
For now I work with goals. what do I want to do this week in daily bits of six actions each. I finish them before I tweet, send mail, or get into forum. I also come into the forum like this one with a notebook and write down and book mark posts. I try to avoid the offers section. I want to use what I have for now till next year. Then I can evaluate.
I have made very little money and now I am convinced beyond any reasonable doubt that it will work.

Not to be flippant, but the one thing holding me back from earning my living from IM is -- SUCCESS.

I've had mild success, but nothing to replace a $100k a year income. I'd really like to work 8 hours a day 4-5 days a week doing this (it's actually fun to me) and spend all other time with my family as I "ramp up." Once I see success, rinse and repeat and drive my working hours down.

But I know me. If I see success, I'll start working harder and longer. That's okay, right? I see so many IM types who profess to work only 2-5 hours a week (or a day) and earn thousands per month.

Why not me? Why not you?
