You can go with .net or .org and it should rank just fine.

I think the content of a website is way more important then the domain name, and search engines have the technology to differentiate a genuine content site from a spammy site.

Having said that, if the .com version is still available, I would choose that one over a .net or .org.

Right, but as you know in today's high competitive environment where 'niche' is the only option left to compete with the turtles who have slowly build their empire high enough and 'hare' of today while to start its race from beginning have to control his speed not to get banned from the search engines.. thats why its good idea to get a domain that contain your main keyword that on one side demands us to stay in your topic and on the other side search engines will easily give him an easy excess into their priority box.

If the .com is taken .net and .org are the next best thing. Put up great content, create a presence and build up name value and recognition and it should work out nicely.

When my name .com was taken by the owner of a t-shirt company, I went with .net and have built up such a presence with it that it would actually be weird if the .com became available and I started using it.

The .net and .org should not matter to the search engines at all as long as the content is good the search engines won't care. If at all possible try to get the .com domain because that is what people are most likely to type into their browser first.

If I have found a site through a search engine and I want to go back later I by default type in the .com version of the url but if the content isn't what I remembered I then try the .net and so on and so forth.

Go to the search engines and see what domains are ranking, but Ive seen net rank well, org is mainly used for organizations

It really doesn't matter. .net or .org work just as well. The search engines pay a lot more attention to your content. You'll also do well to do your keyword research and optimize your pages for the keywords you want to show up in the search engines for. Then use social marketing to extend your reach. Good luck!
